As the 2024 NFL Draft draws close, tension is palpable among the teams. However, that is not the case for the Los Angeles Chargers, with their new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, still in a light mood. Addressing the media’s questions, one query seems to be doing rounds: the public’s inquisitiveness regarding their fifth overall pick.
When questioned, Harbaugh looked confused about the program’s GM, Joe Hortiz. He mocked Hortiz about how he would tackle the upcoming days before the draft, highlighting Harbaugh and Hortiz’s bond.

With the immense responsibility ahead of him as the new Chargers head coach, Harbaugh took the press conference as an opportunity to inject humor into the situation. Since Hortiz was absent, the head coach took a playful jab at the GM. Harbaugh went, “When’s Joe talk next week? The phenomenal question for Joe Hortiz, and you get to go into as much depth as he’ll go into a week before the draft?”
The coach mocks Hortiz for his communication style. This showcases the camaraderie that they both share. The Chargers have been new to Hortiz and Harbaugh since joining this year. Hortiz accepted the job on January 29, but he had known Harbaugh for 26 years when the now Chargers HC played as a quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Gradually, their relationship grew over the years as Hortiz went out scouting at Stanford and Michigan. The dynamic duo had recently passed their first difficult test.

Harbaugh and Hortiz decided to part ways with highly productive but injured wide receiver Mike Williams only a few hours before the start of the new league year. Considering the Chargers’ current cap situation, this move saved the Chargers $20 million. Last month, the program entered with $25 million over the salary cap.
This was not it, as the Chargers still have much to do in terms of building their roster as they gear up to rebound from last season’s 5-12 record. Drawing focus on their plan, Hortiz gave a rundown of their intention: “Our goal is to build a winner every year. We want to compete to win a championship every year, OK? That’s going to be starting now.”

Harbaugh is the winningest active coach in the NFL by record and he built a winner at all stops. Hortiz, on the other hand, came from a very well-run Ravens. Both their experiences put to use will be ideal in moving the Chargers through the path that lay ahead of them.
