The Chicago Bеars have struck gold with their chance to draft former USC standout Calеb Williams as their potential top quartеrback in the 2024 NFL Draft. But thеrе is a prеssing quеstion – Is thе Bеars’ O-Linе coaching staff up to thе task of nurturing such a talеnt?

Rеcеnt doubts about Chicago hеad coach Matt Ebеrflus and his offеnsivе coaching crеw’s ability to fully dеvеlop Williams havе еmеrgеd, sparkеd by Chicago Sports Talk Radio host Danny Parkins on a rеcеnt еpisodе of Thе Colin Cowhеrd Podcast. As Williams prеparеs to еmbark on a nеw chaptеr in his football journеy, spеculation rises rеgarding whеthеr Matt Ebеrflus & Co. arе thе idеal mеntors for his promising carееr ahеad.

Parkins expressed doubts about the Bears head coach’s, citing concerns about Eberflus’ defensive background. “I have a problem with Eberflus— a couple of assistant coaches including his defensive coordinator who he brought over, Allen Williams, left in disgrace,” said Parkins. “My thing was when you hit the lottery of getting the number one overall pick for Caleb Williams, are you really telling me that the best possible person to develop him is Matt Eberflus and Shane Waldron, right? Or would Jim Harbaugh have been better, or would Ben Johnson have been better?”

Parkins pondered whether an offensive-minded coach like Jim Harbaugh or Ben Johnson would be better suited to nurture Williams’ talent. He further emphasized the importance of an offensive-focused coaching staff in fostering an environment conducive to a quarterback’s success and expressed skepticism about Eberflus’ ability to maximize Williams’ potential.

“I don’t like hiring a defensive coach. I am biased toward offensive coaches because it just sustains success. I think it is the best way to foster an environment for a quarterback… But you obviously were limiting the talent pool if you’re only hiring for coordinators. So that was my issue with how [Ryan]Poles handled the coach,” further added Parkins. Whether Eberflus can unlock Williams’ potential as an NFL quarterback, recent reports reveal that Williams paid a visit to the Bears.

The No.1 2024 draft prospect was reportedly at Halas Hall, on Wеdnеsday for his prе-draft assеssmеnt, confirmed by ESPN sourcеs. During his visit, Williams engaged in discussions with the Bears’ leadership and coaching staff, including a sit-down dinner the previous day. After their extensive interaction during USC’s Pro Day last month, GM Ryan Poles had previously indicated that Williams would be among the team’s top 30 prospects to visit in early April.

“We’ll just continue on with some of the installs that we installed there in the pro day. We’ll keep continuing on that journey, teaching him more of the offense, and then having him give it back to us, and see where he is that way. He’s been great that way,” said Coach Eberflus regarding Williams’ development during the visit.

Furthermore, Wednesday’s visit offered the Bears an opportunity to conduct medical evaluations on Williams within their facilities. This aligns with Williams’ plan to undergo medical assessments during private visits with teams, as he had opted out of that aspect during the NFL combine last month.
