The Michigan Wolverines are lacking a running backs coach and here’s what Sherrone Moore can do about the dire situation. Ever since the departure of Jim Harbaugh, the staff has been in shambles, with more coaches leaving than joining. But with Moore on a recruiting spree, maybe all hope isn’t lost for the reigning CFP champions.
Jim Harbaugh, the former head coach for the Wolverines, announced his exit from the team after 9 years. Under Harbaugh, the team went 15-0 last season and eventually won the natty. After his exit, several coaches like Ben Herbert and Jesse Minter decided to follow in his footsteps and join him at the Los Angeles Chargers. Since then, Moore has been charged with the responsibility of rebuilding the squad from scratch. Moreover, it was recently announced that Mike Hart will not be making his return to Michigan for the 2024 season. While it is unfortunate, Moore will have to recover quickly, and here are the possible replacements that could take over for Hart.

First on the list we have- Tyrone Wheatley. The former RB who has previously worked under Jim Harbaugh could very well make a return in the hopes of guiding Moore’s team to a consecutive national championship. As of now, he is the HC at Wayne State but if given a chance to coach at Michigan, he could be persuaded by Sherrone Moore. Moreover, it doesn’t sound too unrealistic for a coach to quit a D-2 HC job to be Michigan’s RB coach and thus, the fans can cross their fingers on this.
Next up we have- Devon Spalding. The current RB coach for the Wisconsin Badgers could be a good fit for the Wolverines since he is a Michigan native and also played RB for Central Michigan back in the day. He possesses good coaching skills and could gel well under Moore’s guidance.
Thirdly, we have DeMarco Murray. Murray and Moore used to be teammates back at Oklahoma and hence, there exists a connection between the former RB for the Dallas Cowboys and the current HC for the Wolverines. Currently, Murray is in his fourth year of being Oklahoma’s RB coach and is liked by the fans and the players alike for his quality inputs and impeccable strategies. It seems a bit difficult to pry him away from his alma mater team but with money and power comes a lot of credible reputation, tools which Michigan could use to its advantage.
Lastly, it is Denard Robinson who stands on this list. Robins is currently the assistant director of player personnel for the Wolverines, reports suggest that he could thrive as a RB coach. He was a RB himself for four seasons in the NFL and as such; he has a lot of experience with how the plays work. It could be a risk to present him with the opportunity, but it doesn’t look like Moore has a lot of options on his table.
Thus, these are the potential candidates that could make a dent in the RB staff at Michigan. With all that said, here’s a brief look at Hart’s contributions to the team during his 3 seasons.
Mike Hart and his accomplishments for the Michigan Wolverines as he bids adieu to the team
It is a sad day for the fans of the men in blue and maize with yet another coach deciding to jump ship and run. But while Moore goes on the mission of finding a coach to take over the reins from Hart, this is how the team thrived under the RB coach.

In Hart’s debut season with the Wolverines in 2021, he mentored RB Hassan Haskins to an impeccable season. Haskins completed over 20 touchdowns and earned a first-team All-Big Ten selection as well. Moreover, in the seasons of 2022 and 2023, Blake Corum shone brightly under Hart’s flashlight. Corum broke the TD record and set a program record with 58 touchdowns. Thus, it is evident that Hart had a pivotal role to play in Michigan’s success throughout the years but it is time to say goodbye to the glory of the past and look on to the goals of the future as Moore assembles a top-quality staff.
