The toughest of times forges the steeliest of determinations. Michigan Wolverines 2023 season was a witness to it, with the team winning the National Championship straight following a massive sign-stealing fiasco. Now, as Sherrone Moore inherits the legacy, it is up to him to prove himself similarly. When Jim Harbaugh took over Michigan in 2015, the biggest challenge awaiting him was building a team from scratch. It was in the last season, after almost 8 years, that Harbaugh’s dream was accomplished. Safe to say, the ways won’t come too easy for Moore as well.

When Moore put on the cap of Michigan’s head coach, he had Harbaugh’s team with him. However, per reports and situations around him, he was expecting a major chunk of staff to shift to the NFL. What he did not expect was Ben Herbert’s transfer. UM was already giving him a lucrative contract worth above a million dollars, with, of course, all the credit he deserved for turning Michigan’s boys into capable football players physically.

Even Rich Eisen agreed saying, “Ben Herbert to me was the biggest loss.” However, contrasting to the reports published earlier, Eisen believes that Moore was expecting a move like that from Herbert. ” Herbert was expected to go and people were like kind of incredulous because the role of the strength coach seems to be a lot more significant with a college team than it is in the NFL. it’s really more of a developmental aspect in college,” Eisen highlighted, mentioning the vitality Herbert’s role possessed. With the importance Herbert’s position held, it only seems logical for Moore to take his sweet time to get his replacement, right?

Sherrone Moore announced Ben Herbert’s replacement first

Well, the first position to get replaced was that of Ben Herbert. Justin Tress, the assistant director of strength and conditioning, who had worked extensively with Herbert, was promoted to the position of director of strength and conditioning. Spending all 8 seasons at Michigan with Herbert, along with their earlier experience at Arkansas, seems to be a positive thing for Tress as Herbert’s replacement, as the techniques won’t be starkly different. “I think is probably as close to that as you can get,” believed Eisen. Amidst Jim Harbaugh’s poaching rampage, a few staff members are everything Moore needs to handle Michigan.

This, paired with all the advancements Moore is making in his hiring process, like securing the NFL famous Wink Martindale, to interviewing candidates for the other vacant position, is expected to yield the results he wants.
