Michigan is in a state of chaos. Not only their national-winning head coach Jim Harbaugh has left UM, but he also has taken the best of the head coaches with him. The repercussion resembles the aftermath of a disaster as several pivotal coaching positions are vacant with the spring practice session forthcoming. Sherrone Moore, the head coach who has to replace them, has announced replacements for two positions. Justin Tress as the director of strength and conditioning and Wink Martindale as the defensive coach.

As the hiring process continues, Sherrone Moore is in talks with Stephen Adegoke, the Houston Texas safeties coach, to be the next defensive backs coach, per Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports. Sam Weeb also reported that he ‘crushed’ his interview yesterday. Adegoke would fill in the shows of Steve Clinkscale, the former defensive coach at Michigan, who has now joined Jim Harbaugh at the Chargers.

The best part for Michigan is his familiarity with the schemes of the program. Adegoke spent one season on Michigan’s coaching staff during the 2021 season as a graduate assistant before moving to the NFL. He started his college football graduate assistant at Florida in 2019 and spent two seasons there before joining the Wolverines for a year. For the last two seasons, Adegoke has spent his last two seasons in the NFL, as a defensive quality control coach with the 49ers in 2022 and as the safeties coach for the Houston Texans in 2023. During his season at Texas, the franchise ranked 23rd in passing defense with 234.5 passing yards allowed per game and recorded 16 interceptions during the regular season.

Adegoke would be joining all the other fresh faces at Michigan, lined up as the new coaching staff at Michigan as Moore gears up for the post-Jim Harbaugh era. Despite Moore hiring the best of coaches, several positions remain vacant.

Sherrone Moore’s hiring and firing process

Moore has made a masterstroke by hiring Wink Martindale as a replacement for Jesse Minter. Minter and the DC before him, Mike McDonald, have learned from Martindale. Hence, Wink’s familiarity with Michigan’s defensive scheme, ranked their defense at 2nd rank overall.

Moreover, Moore is also in talks with hiring Adegoke, who is familiar with the schemes of Michigan. Hence, Moore’s primary focus seems to be the candidates who have substantial familiarity with how things work at Michigan. Will he decide to put a spin on this scheme, or will he continue the drill? Only time will tell.
