On Tuesday, the NFL revealed the extensive roster comprising 321 players slated to participate in the 2024 scouting combine, a highly anticipated event in the football calendar. Among the standout prospects set to showcase their skills are Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, both regarded as top picks in the upcoming draft, adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings.

Interestingly, Michigan stands out with a significant presence in the list of invitees, indicative of the Wolverines’ formidable talent pool. The university recently shared an announcement post celebrating the achievement of its players who received invitations. However, amidst the jubilation, eagle-eyed observers noticed an omission: one notable player from Michigan’s lineup was conspicuously absent from the roster.

The NFL Scouting Combine, slated for February 26 to March 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, has unveiled its list of invitees, revealing a staggering total of 18 Michigan players. This impressive turnout surpasses the previous record set by Georgia in 2022, further solidifying Michigan’s status as a powerhouse in collegiate football. The abundance of Wolverines players selected for the Combine underscores the program’s esteemed reputation for nurturing NFL-caliber talent and validates Harbaugh’s foresight. However, there has been one blunder. Star Wolverines’ tight end AJ Barner’s picture was missed out on the official announcement digital banner shared on Platform X, which had Barner commenting, “i’ll be there 2.” Ah, looks like Sherrone Moore and co. slipped up!

In July of last year, former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh made a bold proclamation, foreseeing a groundbreaking moment for the Wolverines in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Following Michigan’s triumphant journey to a national championship, Harbaugh confidently asserted that the university would shatter records by producing the highest number of draft picks from a single school. Despite initial skepticism, recent developments have lent credence to Harbaugh’s prediction.

How is the NFL Scouting Combine looking this year?

While the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis traditionally sees a significant turnout of top draft prospects, recent trends indicate that some players prefer to save their physical demonstrations for their respective pro days. This shift has become more pronounced in recent years, with many high-profile picks opting out of most physical drills at the combine. Notably, Jared Goff was the last quarterback taken first overall to complete a full workout during the combine back in 2016. While there hasn’t been any official announcement yet, it’s plausible that both Williams and Maye might forego most of the physical aspects of the combine.

However, there remains a possibility that they could choose to showcase their talents on the field. In contrast, Jayden Daniels, often regarded as the third-best quarterback in most draft rankings, might seize the opportunity to exhibit his athleticism fully. With his dynamic skill set, Daniels could potentially elevate his draft stock and enter the conversation alongside Williams and Maye. According to projections by B/R’s Scouting Department, Williams is expected to be drafted first overall, followed by Maye at No. 2, and Daniels at No. 3. Additionally, projections suggest that Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. could be selected at No. 4 by the Arizona Cardinals, while Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt is predicted to join the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 5.
