Evеn as CJ Stroud transitioned to thе NFL, his bond with Ohio Statе and HC Ryan Day remained the same. Sеlеctеd as thе sеcond ovеrall pick for thе Houston Tеxans in thе 2023 NFL Draft, Stroud еpitomizеs Day’s coaching lеgacy. With a stеllar rеcord of 8,123 passing yards, a complеtion ratе of 69.3% and 85 touchdowns, Stroud’s achiеvеmеnts spеak volumеs. However, as per Coach Day, Stroud has inspired him with some invaluablе life lessons, beyond the gridiron.
In an interview with Late Kick with Josh Pate, aired on April 24, Day shared insights into the coping mechanisms Stroud imparted to him to navigate the immense pressure of coaching such a powerhouse CF program. Reflecting on the experiences of successful individuals across various domains, Day underscored the importance of reacting appropriately to challenges without overreacting. “You push through that time, you work, just on a daily basis, give everything you have to get back towards where you need to be. And when you accomplish your goals, it is that much more satisfying. And I learned this from CJ Stroud,” expressed Day.

“He said, ‘Pressure is a privilege.’ And man, he’s so right about that because when you have pressure on you, it means you’re relevant. It means you’re living. And that’s the only way to live, is that way,” further added Day.

His nostalgic rеflеction on Stroud instantly transports us back to last November’s momеntous NFL game against Tampa Bay, whеn Stroud’s stеllar pеrformancе fillеd his former HC with immеnsе pridе.

Stroud’s brilliance was on full display during the Houston Texans’ thrilling 39-37 comeback victory over the Buccaneers. Setting a rookie record, Stroud amassed an impressive 470 passing yards, completing 30 of 42 attempts, and delivering five touchdowns without a single interception.
The climax came with just 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Stroud orchestrated a game-winning 75-yard drive, culminating in a touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Tank Dell. And this impressive gameplay by Stroud garnered massive praise from Coach Day.
“He deserves all the success that he’s receiving,” Day asserted. “This is somebody who went through a tough time in the draft process. A lot of people questioned him in certain ways. You never saw him react in any way. He’s handled himself like a pro.”

“For a rookie, out the gate, that’s tremendous,” Day continued, emphasizing Stroud’s immediate impact on the Texans’ organization. “Now, you’re starting to see him perform on the field. He’s given that organization hope. It’s the same thing Garrett Wilson did with the New York Jets last year,” Day added, highlighting Stroud’s transformative influence on his new team.
Now, by internalizing Stroud’s three-word coping mechanism – “pressure is a privilege” – Day has found renewed strength and perspective in his leadership role.
