In a recent interview with Pete Vargas, Coach Prime came on to talk about his journey to becoming one of the most influential figures in the history of the NFL. From being a 2-time Super Bowl winner to the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Deion has come a long way. But many fail to realize that his story to success was that of rags to riches as he came from a severely financially underprivileged family.

Deion talked about raising his 7-year-old younger sister in a household where his mother was always too busy with jobs. He said, “My mama was working the night shifts so she was not there. So we never had a family meal together. Stepfather was in the room, good man though. And I pretty much was raising my sister who’s 7 years younger but my rabbit was getting my mother out of that situation. My mother never saw me play ball in high school and I’m him. I play basketball, football, baseball. Basketball, all state. Football, scholarship. Baseball, drafted by the Kansas City Rose at high school. So be careful who you judge.” Thus, Deion’s tale of struggle gives us and the fans yet another reason to love him and this is why he continues to be an inspiration with each passing day.

If there’s one thing about Coach Prime, is that he’s never hesitant about talking about his family struggles and the hardships that he and his mother had to endure. One of the strongest motivations for him to make it big as an NFL player was to see to it that his mother didn’t have to work ever again.

Talking about retiring her, he said, “My mother has not worked since 1989 when I signed the dotted line for the Atlanta Falcons. And she would never ever work another day because that was my rabbit in this steel. My mother lives with me. So every time I go home and see her. It’s my rabbit. I’m still chasing that.” Thus, Deion’s dream of achieving success for his mother ended up paving the way for the next generation of athletes to draw inspiration from, as he continues to be a pillar in the football community.
