With each passing day, the anticipation surrounding the top franchises in the NFL selecting the most suitable prospective college football players is on the rise. Several of the elite class players like Drake Maye and Caleb Williams have forsaken their shot at the NFL Combine and chosen to smoothen out their flaws and brush their skills back in the universities. Hence, scouting heads and coaches have no idea what they have to unpack, good or bad. Still, they are sure of one thing – their passion to play football is unparalleled.
The analysts, on the other hand, have some divergent views on the table. NFL Veteran, QB Dan Orlovsky dissected Drake Maye’s fundamental flaws in ESPN’s Get Up. The ESPN host jumped straight to the QB that came to his mind when breaking down Maye’s performance: Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love. Back in the day when Love was to be drafted, his fundamental flaw was highlighted as ‘his wild throws’, per Orlovsky. Hence, he has been a witness to the Packers giving time to Love, watching the magic unravel. “What Green Bay Packers realized was ‘Jordan Love has some fundamental mechanical flaws’. We saw them still in the early part of the season,” Orlovsky believed. That is why, according to him, the Green Bay Packers need to do this – “Drake Maye needs to be Jordan Love. Drake Maye needs to be on the Jordan Love plan.” So how does Drake Maye fit with Jordan Love?

Despite the criticism, Orlovsky could not get over how good of a player Drake Maye is. “I would absolutely take Drake Maye in the first round,” said the ESPN host without a second thought. To back it up, he brought out the stats comparison between Caleb Williams and Maye.

Caleb Williams v Drake Maye
A head-to-head between two of the most promising candidates to be the No. 1 pick is the need of the hour. Williams got off to a blazing start in the season, however, USC’s performance fizzled out during the second half of the season. Maye’s story was the opposite as his start of the season did not look good to analysts like Jordan Reid, but Maye defied it by shunning everyone in the second half.
Along with winning ACC Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and Player of the Year in 2022, Maye has thrown for 5,597 yards on 67.5% completion, resulting in 44 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in passing and 879 yards and 10 touchdowns in rushing over 22-games.

Williams, on the other hand, has passed for 8,052 yards on 67.4% completion, resulting in 84 touchdowns and 10 Int, and rushing for 907 yards and 19 touchdowns, along with being the Heisman winner in 2022, of course. Who do you think is the better?
