Did you know that since the first NFL draft in 1936, only five Buffaloes’ athletes have been selected with a top-10 pick? But the number was supposed to go up in 2025. Coach Prime touted Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders to be among the top four picks in the 2025 draft, with either of them making it to the No. 1 pick. However, many NFL players and analysts showed skepticism of Sanders’ claims, and now ESPN has joined on the bandwagon.

ESPN’s 2025 NFL Mock Draft placed QB Sanders at the fifth position, while Hunter remained absent from the top-10 list. Surprisingly, Carson Beck of the Georgia Bulldogs took up the top spot and Mykel Williams was right behind. LSU’s Will Campbell came next, followed by Tennessee’s James Pearce.

It is evident that the Buffs’ fans want Shedeur to end up with the Atlanta Falcons following in his father’s footsteps in the NFL. Prime Time was drafted by the team in 1989 and he wants his son to join that team not just because of his legacy, but also because the team has black people in positions of authority and keeps things real.

The team will also be in need of a successor to take Kirk Cousins’ place. As per rumors, Cousins will not be with the Falcons for the next season. So, analysts have been devising plans surrounding this. Cam Newton surely fits the criteria, but so does Shedeur. He has been projected within the top-5, but many have placed the QB lower.

CBS Sports’ NFL draft analyst, Ryan Wilson, has projected Shedeur Sanders as a No. 1 overall (Carolina Panthers).
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz from USA TODAY Sports sees Sanders as a No. 28 overall (Dallas Cowboys).
The Draft Wire has Shedeur Sanders as a No. 15 overall (Los Angeles Rams)
247 Sports had him as a No. 6 overall (New York Giants).
Bleacher Report sees Shedeur Sanders as a No. 3 (Tennessee Titans)

Even though ESPN’s draft was not what Sanders and Buffalo faithfuls expected, many media houses went a different route. Despite certain doubts about Travis Hunter’s performance, he was projected as a top pick in some Mock Draft predictions.

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz from USA TODAY Sports projected Travis Hunter as the second overall pick (New England Patriots).
Ryan Wilson from CBS Sports too had Hunter going No. 2 (Tennessee Titans).
Curt Popejoy from The Draft Wire had Hunter projected as a No. 18 (Chicago Bears).
Ralph D. Russo from the Associated Press had Hunter as a No. 10 overall (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Blake Brockermeyer from 247 Sports had Travis Hunter as a No. 2 overall (Washington Commanders).
Zach Buckley from Bleacher Report projected the athlete as No. 4 (Denver Broncos).

But coming back to ESPN’s NFL Mock Draft list, many football fans disagreed with it. It simply didn’t make sense to them.

Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ snub: “Worst mock draft” per fans

More so than the Colorado players’ absence from the top 3, the fans were puzzled that Carson Beck was at the top. One user, who seemed quite distraught with the rankings, wrote, “This makes no sense. Firstly, why isn’t Atlanta drafting 8th – it’s tradition. Secondly, why isn’t Sanders mocked to go to Atlanta. Worst mock draft I’ve seen in a whole. I don’t care if it’s “way too early”.”

One user made a snide remark. They wrote, “Something must be wrong with my smart tv because I don’t see how C. Beck is even a 1st rounder. I think we just pulling names out of a hat when it comes to these QB’s

Even though many argue that Shedeur should be a top 3 pick, this user made fun of the fans’ expectations and said, “Quit drinking Prime’s Kool-Aid. Sanders isn’t a top 5 QB let alone a top 5 pick.”

A user also pointed out the harsh reality of the Colorado cornerback not being on the list and lashed out in an emotional fit. He wrote, “Where Travis Hunter at? And I’m asking genuinely and sarcastically a bit bc I’ve seen some analysts saying he’s a top 5-top 10 pick? This why I don’t pay nothing draft related any attention until literally AFTER the combine. You don’t even know draft order or teams needs now.”

Further, a fan got straight to the point and declared the mock draft invalid since it didn’t mention Hunter. They wrote, “If Travis Hunter not in your top 10 picks this has ZERO credibility 😂” Lastly, another football fan criticized the mock draft. “Travis Hunter not in the Top 10 is abysmal.

There are rumors around the lack of quality and depth in the 2025 QB Draft class in comparison to the 2024 class as well. The 2024 NFL Draft had six quarterbacks selected in the first 12 picks. So, there are some chances that Shedeur could be ranked as the No. 1 QB in the 2025 NFL Draft. Similarly, Travis Hunter is also in a precarious situation with some projecting him as a lower pick and other praising him as a top 5 pick.

Do you think Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders deserve a mention within the top-5?
