The LA Chargers with their blue and golden colors are facing a dark day today for the poor conditions with how they’re treating their players. Owned by the Spanos family, and worth over $1 billion, the team is facing backlash from the fans for not spending enough towards the betterment of their players.
Jim Harbaugh, the newest head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, was welcomed to the team this January with great pomp. His contract entails an annual average of $16 million over a 5-year contract, making the total to come out to be over $80 million. This poses a question as to how come the team is willing to spend so much on the head coach itself but not pay enough for proper facilities for the players, who are the ones that make the Chargers what they are.

It was only recently announced that the Chargers’ Costa Mesa training facility received a very poor grade from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). They received an F for the following categories- Treatment of Families, Food/Cafeteria, and the Locker Room. What’s interesting to note is that they received their highest grade, B, in only two categories including Nutritionist/Dietician and Head Coach. Moreover, the overall grade they received ranked them at the 30th position out of the 32 teams, which is not to be expected from a team that just recently splurged money on signing Jim Harbaugh.
On the latest episode of the ‘Locked On Chargers’, Daniel Wade shared his experience of being within the Chargers’ poorly rated facilities and gave his brief analysis. He said, “They got in really really bad grades from the NFLPA report cards and for some reason, I can understand why. Like I went into the cafeteria where not all players are meant to be in there at the same time. They order and the kitchen has it ready for them.”
He further added, “I think my main takeaway from the whole facility was just- they were doing the best with the space that was afforded to them because they’re working in an office building and I truly think they’ve maximized every inch of the place that they can but by NFL standards that’s not going to cut it.”
It’s interesting to see that the team estimated to have a value of over $3.875 billion, is at the bottom of the table. Thankfully, this isn’t going to be a permanent situation since the Chargers are supposed to move into their new training facilities in El Segundo soon, which will hopefully rank them higher as per the NFLPA.

El Segundo is set to be the new headquarters for the Chargers
The new home of the Chargers is located on a 14-acre property, situated just east of El Segundo Boulevard. The project is estimated to be worth over $270 million and is being designed by Gensler Sports. Moreover, the facility is set to include a 145,000-square-foot main building that will house offices, studio facilities, a hospitality club, and a 3,100-square-foot media center.
In 2022, it was announced that the project would be over by the Spring of 2024. Now, the Chargers Team Store will open its doors to the public on Thursday, December 7th, right before the season of holly-jolly Christmas. But even though the team is set to move into the new center, the NFLPA will continue to have a bad rep on the team’s reputation for disregarding the players’ well-being.
