Following his triumphant tenure at his alma mater, securing a national championship, Jim Harbaugh is now shifting his focus to a new challenge: chasing a Super Bowl victory. The former Michigan head coach embarked on this new journey by signing a five-year contract with the Chargers.

Jim Harbaugh faces a pressing challenge as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. The team is currently over the 2024 salary cap by about $45 million and is projected to exceed it by roughly $55 million when considering the top 51 players and the incoming rookies. Addressing this financial hurdle will be a top priority for Harbaugh, aided by newly appointed Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz. Former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who played college football at Stanford University coached by Harbaugh, recently highlighted another obstacle in Harbaugh’s way.

On Saturday’s episode of The Richard Sherman Show, the former cornerback stated that even though Harbaugh might be in charge of one of the most talented teams in football,” there are some serious “cap obstacles that they’re going to have to work through.’ Harbaugh and Hortiz are facing crucial decisions ahead of April’s draft, holding the fifth pick while grappling with a roster that’s at least $45 million over the salary cap. Notably, star wideouts Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, alongside linebackers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, carry cap numbers of over “$30 million” each for the upcoming 2024 season. According to Sherman, the best way the Chargers can deal with the situation is, to find a way to either lower them or eliminate them altogether.”

There have been discussions about potentially trading Khalil Mack, who is coming off a standout season with 15 or possibly 17 sacks. The key focus for Harbaugh is on finding ways to alleviate the salary burden. According to Sherman, Joey Bosa might also need to be traded or released, with the San Francisco 49ers emerging as a potential destination, given his ties to California and the possibility of reuniting with his brother. Harbaugh is likely to bring in Greg Roman and some of his former colleagues from Stanford, leveraging his expertise in assembling a strong coaching staff.
