When Jesse Minter left for the Chargers, Michigan’s fanbase was utterly disheartened as under his leadership, Michigan’s defense had soared in the sky as Michigan was ranked 2nd in defense overall. This makes hiring a replacement of Minter equally painstaking and pivotal for Sherrone Moore. However, cherishing all the years he spent with Michigan, Minter had someone in mind who was the perfect fit to inherit his defense legacy at Michigan, LaMar Morgan.
Per reports by 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Moore and Co. have finalized on Jesse Minter’s recommendation, LaMar Morgan as the new defensive backs coach. Morgan left his role as a defensive coordinator in Louisiana to take up the role. Minter and Morgan formed a friendship at Vanderbilt, where they worked together. Another face added to Michigan’s fresh staff!

Morgan’s last job was at his alma mater, Louisiana, where he served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Moreover, he has also served at Western Carolina, Houston, UL-Monroe, and Vanderbilt. In ’22 and ’23, the Ragin’ Cajuns allowed 25.7 points per game. They also featured on the top 40 table as they only allowed 22.8 in the two seasons.
Not only that, the 63 sacks and forced 46 turnovers over the last two years, where 28 of those turnovers came through interceptions while 18 more came from recoveries off of 23 forced fumbles, were the highlights of Morgan’s defensive career at Louisiana. In his career as a safety coach at Louisiana, he posted 111 tackles, nine pass breakups, and four interceptions in 40 appearances with the team. The best part: the defense at Ragin’ Cajuns tied with seven other teams, one of them being Michigan, at the number 1 spot in the nation for defensive scores, per ON3.
Yet, the hiring of Morgan came as quite a shock to the Michigan fanbase, as days before, Maize and Blue officials were reported to be quite interested in a Houston Texas safeties coach.
Sherrone Moore overlooks the previous candidate
Days before Zenitz released this report, he reported that Moore and Co were interested in Stephen Adegoke, the Houston Texas safeties coach. To further fuel this report, Sam Weeb reported that Adegoke ‘crushed’ his interview with UM officials. Adegoke seemed to have an upper hand over other candidates as he spent one season on Michigan’s coaching staff during the 2021 season as a graduate assistant before moving to the NFL.
For the last two seasons, Adegoke has spent his last two seasons in the NFL, as a defensive quality control coach with the 49ers in 2022 and as the safeties coach for the Houston Texans in 2023. Yet, it was Morgan who stole the show at Michigan, impressing everyone with his resume.
