Caleb Williams as 'Abraham Lincoln'—Is this the best nickname in NFL history?

The Chicago Bears training camp is kicking off with high expectations for Caleb Williams.  And it’s mostly about “believing in Caleb” as coach Matt Eberflaus said on Friday. The 2024 No. 1 overall pick seems to be more than ready to undergo his rookie minicamp but before that, he made an amusing scene with his defensive teammate.

The Bears locker room is usually filled with quirky exchanges and the latest subtle jab at their rookie QB caught fans’ attention. But do you think Chicago’s No. 1 pick and Abraham Lincoln have anything in common? So the question is how did Caleb Williams come to be called Abraham Lincoln? All because of a shirt?

An interesting exchange went down in the Bears’ locker room on July 20. A Caleb Williams fan page shared DE DeMarcus Walker’s IG post on X in which he likened their rookie QB to Abraham Lincoln. The caption on X read, “@livinglegend_44 called Caleb Williams Abe Lincoln.”

In the video, Williams was seen devouring a sandwich when DeMarcus Walker came up to him and commented on his crisp and loose white T-shirt, adding the former US president’s name into the mix saying he would trade up for his “loose-a** shirt.” Quite a casual friendly banter or would you call it bullying? Nonetheless, it shows how well Williams has integrated with the Bears after their lengthy effort to draft him. And the way he’s preparing himself for the training camp showcases his diligence.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner signed a 4-year, $39 million contract with the Bears intending to turn their dismal history around this season. Before the training camp, Caleb Williams showed his preparedness on July 19 when he said, “I’ve kind of put myself in this position many times before I became a Chicago Bear on the 25th of April.” In his three seasons in college football with Oklahoma and USC, Williams recorded 93 TDs and just 15 interceptions which emphasizes his throwing talent.

The Bears’ rookie QB said, “We have our vision and stuff and we try to work towards that every single day that we get, every single day that I get, and making sure I’m putting myself in the right position that I’m getting in early.” The first time Williams gets to showcase his talent in the NFL will be on August 1 when they meet the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Then, it’ll be followed by their season opener on September 8 against the Tennessee Titans at Soldier Field.
