Caleb Williams Hailed ‘Closest Thing to Patrick Mahomes’ Amid Justin Fields’ Uncertain Future With the Bears

Very few players come close to getting their names mentioned in the same sentence as Patrick Mahomes. Caleb Williams, however, has been on the cusp of comparison. Several ex-players and analysts draw a close similarity between the two quarterbacks. “You hear people talk about how he’s the closest thing to Patrick Mahomes, and I see what they’re saying,” Jason Bell told DAZN. “This kid, he’s got it all, he’s aware, he’s got the skill set that you need at the position and he’s a competitor.”

With the Bears getting one of the first picks in the 2024 draft, things look uncertain for Justin Fields, who could be on his way out. If the Bears decide to move for Williams, Fields’ would be put out on the trade block. Fields has plenty of qualities, including being one of the best rushing quarterbacks in the league. Hence, there will be plenty of teams looking to secure his services. Fields has been massively linked to the Atlanta Falcons. It might be the most logical destination in this career phase, with the Las Vegas Raiders being the second-best option.

At just 21, Williams won the Heisman Trophy. He is expected to be among the first names picked up during the 2024 NFL Draft. He has already declared for the draft, which is set to take place on April 25. The former Trojan star has mentioned his dream of playing in the NFL, and the Bears currently hold his pick while other top teams remain interested.

Caleb Williams came into 2023 on the back of a strong 2022 season, winning the Heisman Trophy. Throughout seven games in 2023, he had already thrown over 2000 meters and made 23 touchdowns with just four interceptions. The former Dallas Cowboys player turned pundit, Jason Bell spoke further about his qualities, reminiscing his time at Oklahoma. Bell reminds us that Williams was not supposed to be a starter, but fought for his place. This displayed a solid personality and courage, showcasing how competition doesn’t intimidate him.

He adds how Williams is exactly what a franchise would want from a young quarterback for long-term glory. “Everybody respects him on and off the field; that’s important for a guy you’re bringing in that will carry your organization for the next decade,” he added.

On the Rich Eisen show on YouTube, Daniel Jeremiah also expressed his views on how Williams still needs polishing in his craft despite having the ceiling of being a top quarterback. At the same time, Merill Hoge dubbed him “Not Special.” Jeremiah argued that three games might not have been enough to judge someone’s potential. He then compared Williams to Bears quarterback Fields, underlining, “His quick feet, quick hands, and instinctual abilities,” which are better traits than Fields.

While the Bears might not be the only top franchise interested in Williams. The Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and New England Patriots will all try to pick him.
