Colin Kaepernick Reveals as a Kid His White Adoptive Mother Said His Hairstyle Make Him “Look Like a Little Thug”

Colin Kaepernick has once again made headlines for controversial reasons. The free-agency quarterback has always stated his honest opinion on what he finds unjust. Furthermore, Kaepernick’s NFL predicament has never come in the way of his sense of justice. He once spoke up about what his opinions were on the injustice in the NFL against certain players. However, he recently spoke about an interaction with someone very close to him.

He spoke about an interesting dialogue that once happened between him and his adoptive mother that made him feel uncomfortable. Interestingly, the interactions between him and his mother might’ve seemed very harmless from an outsider’s point of view.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback revealed how his adoptive mother had a problem with certain aspects of his identity. As a youngster, Kaepernick was enthralled by the icons of the time. One of the most popular icons of the quarterback’s time was legendary 76ers player, Allen Iverson. As per TMZ, Kaepernick loved wearing cornrows the way Iverson would. However, Kaepernick recently revealed that his adoptive mother had a problem with it. It is very intriguing to note that Kaepernick’s adoptive mother was a white woman.

The quarterback revealed that his guardian thought that the trademark AI hairstyle wasn’t very professional. He went on to say that his mother described the hairstyle as one that “made him look like a little thug.” As Kaepernick revealed this information to the public, he spoke about how there was a deeper nuance to this incident. In his eyes, it went a lot deeper than just a mother disciplining her child. He mentioned that her comments were part of a much deeper and more problematic dialogue.

The truth behind Kaepernick’s adult cornrows

While Kaepernick admitted to having a lot of love for his parents, he revealed that he faced a lot of problematic judgment from his adoptive parents. He went on to say, “I think it was important to show, ‘No, this can happen in your own home.’ And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated.” Furthermore, he explained how he felt like there was some racial bias even in his own home and how he moved forward from it. Alongside this, his biracial identity and his admiration for his childhood hero led the quarterback to sport cornrows even as an adult. In this way, Kaepernick shed light on the racial aspect of something as seemingly simple as hairstyle.

Kaepernick’s recent statements go on to add another layer to the racial narrative the quarterback speaks for. While Kaepernick has never been afraid to speak his mind, it remains to be seen what different nuances his personal experiences add to the cause he believes in.
