In a devastating blow for Broncos fans, their QB and Head Coach have disappointed them yet again. In a match that looked like the Broncos were finally going to reverse their defeat last week, a terrible second half dashed all hopes. Now, it looks like they need to go back to the drawing board and do some serious rethinking of how they are going to play upcoming matches.

Thankfully for Broncos fans, their QB has not fallen into despair yet. Last week after the Raiders‘ defeat, the $245 million player shared on Instagram a quote by Coach Prime to inspire himself. This time, he has invoked Black Mamba to come to his rescue.

Good beginnings do not necessarily make good endings

In his Instagram story, Wilson shared a reel of the late Lakers player and basketball legend, Kobe Bryant. “And the only way you can get better is by pushing yourself beyond what you believe you are capable of doing,” is what the QB hopes to take away from Bryant. Athletes, irrespective of which sport they play, have drawn inspiration from Kobe’s Mamba Mentality. And Wilson needs it a tad bit more than others.

After promising to do better, Russell Wilson and co. secured a 21-3 lead early in the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. But as the game entered the second half, miscues from Denver on both offense and defense, led to the Raiders leading with 35 – 27, with just 3 seconds left on the clock.

Then a miracle happened. The 7x Pro Bowler threw a 50-yard, Hail Mary pass. And WR  Brandon Johnson caught the ball in the end zone. Touchdown! The game was now 35-33. Hoping to secure a tie and go for overtime, the Broncos opted for a two-point conversion. The pass intended for WR Courtland Sutton was broken by the Washington Commanders’ CB Benjamin St-Juste. Broncos fans were left bitter by the fact that the referees did not throw a yellow flag for a PI, resulting in their defeat.

Wilson, who was at one point the highest-paid NFL player of all time, is turning to Bryant in these trying times. It’s not just because of the legendary status of Black Mamba as a sports person, but also because of the close personal bond that the two families share.

A bond that goes beyond sports

It would be an understatement to say that the two families are close. Late Kobe Bryant’s daughter, Natalia Bryant, calls Wilson and his wife, Ciara her uncle and aunt. The Wilsons also keep making gestures of love for the Bryants. They sent Natalia flowers as she embarked on her third year of college. The couple was also present to send off Natalia to prom. And on Gigi’s birthday, they sent over flowers with a card that read, “Happy Birthday Gigi. Forever in our hearts, Love, The Wilsons.

The Broncos QB describes Bryant as his idol. He is often seen sporting his jersey. Ciara also loves attending sports events wearing Mambacita clothes. They have been a pillar of support for the bereaved Bryant family when they lost Kobe and daughter Gigi to the terrible helicopter crash on 26 January 2020.

The Broncos now stand at 0-2 on the scoreboard. However, Wilson seems to be doing better under new Head Coach Payton than he did under Hackett. The Broncos are set to face the Miami Dolphins on September 24. Will Mamba Mentality help the Broncos reverse their losing streak or will Wilson’s doubters stand vindicated?
