November 6 marked the NASCAR Cup Series Championship at the Phoenix Raceway. The Race saw 36 racers take part, but only 4 were eligible for the championship. This was based on how the season panned out. This monumental race also marked NASCAR honoring former Arizona Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald played for the Cardinals for 17 seasons and was their top wide receiver. He recorded over 17,000 receiving yards and over 120 touchdowns during his run with the Cardinals. NASCAR invited the 39-year-old to drive the pace car for their Cup Series Championship event.

Phoenix made the perfect platform to honor the Arizona player as he served the Arizona sports fraternity for nearly two decades. Julie Giese, then President of the Pheonix Raceway, also spoke of Fitzgerald’s longing impact on the Phoenix community.

The NFL great has accumulated significant wealth from his time with the Cardinals. The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation benefits from a good percentage of these earnings. His foundation caters to youth education and breast cancer awareness.

Popular racing media house, ‘Frontstretch’ took some time to question the legendary wide receiver. Fitzgerald mentioned how this wasn’t his first time at a NASCAR event. He also mentioned it was his fourth time at The Phoenix Raceway. He also mentioned his relationship with the drivers. “I love the drivers, really down to Earth approachable guys. Some of the team owners are really good friends of mine… So uhh it’s really cool”. On being asked if he had a favorite pick, he stayed on the fence. “No, I’ve got too many friends. I want everybody to win.”

The Race was a grand success. Joey Logano took away the laurels for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship as he came out on top. Logano started the race in pole position in his Penske Ford Car. Post 312 grueling laps, he came out on top. Not picking any favorites, Larry Fitzgerald would have been happy with this outcome.
