Kay entered Riley’s life in June 1964. It was when they tied the knot. Riley often referred to her as “The Love of His Life.” A sentiment echoed throughout their 60 years of marriage. 60 years! Their marriage is a testament to the fact that marriages do last if you find the right partners.
Together, the Gunnels couple raised 3 children. Victoria, John, and Christopher. And the ones who would join in on that list would be their 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Kay wasn’t just Riley’s partner in life; she shared his journeys and adventures. Including moving from Georgia to Pennsylvania and eventually to New Jersey’s shore in 1983. Her role as a mother was equally impactful.
Kathryn nurtured a family legacy tied deeply to football, with their children and grandchildren excelling in the sport. Their son, John, was the starting QB on Ocean City’s 1984 South Jersey Group III title team. His son, Riley Gunnels IV, is currently a promising freshman quarterback for his varsity team, Shippensburg.
At just 14 years old, Riley IV has already made an impression. Additionally, the couple’s other son, Christopher “Skipper” Scott Gunnels, was a standout athlete as well. He was an All-South Jersey performer who went on to play at the University of Maryland. Their legacy also includes Riley’s grandson, Joe “Chugger” LaCasse, who was a notable player for the Raiders. These impressive feats highlight the ongoing athletic achievements within the Gunnels family.
From cheering in the stands to celebrating milestones like Riley IV’s varsity debut, she kept the family spirit alive. Her unwavering support laid the foundation for a tight-knit family—a legacy Riley cherished until his passing in December 2024.

She supported him as he mentored youth teams in Atlanta and Pittsburgh, a passion Riley carried even after his NFL days. Through her, Riley found the balance between his professional ambitions and his love for family and community. Kathryn’s unwavering dedication extended into their retirement in Seaville, NJ. As Riley cheered for his Georgia Bulldogs and Eagles, she remained by his side.
