Colin Kaepernick, the former QB for the San Francisco 49ers, is in another career-threatening situation. The 35-year-old has been making the news since rumors of his return have emerged. In the latest news, his literary success seems at risk as book laws against racial injustice writers are being enforced.

Kaepernick was released from the 49ers in 2017 on grounds of political disobedience. After his release, Kaepernick focused more on racial activism and published a book, I Colour Myself Different, which soon became a New York Times bestseller. But with the new policy of the Scholastic Publishing Company, it seems like his literary success will be massively impacted by the new laws.

It was recently announced that the famous children’s publishing company Scholastic will put racial injustice and LGBTQ+-related books into the optional section. This comes into light ever since the American education system has been laying severe stress on book bans and demanding segregation of racial education from the primary syllabus in schools.

Scholastic released a statement amid the heavy criticism: “These laws create an almost impossible dilemma: back away from these titles or risk making teachers, librarians, and volunteers vulnerable to being fired, sued, or prosecuted.” Thus, one can infer that the American education system is the root of the problem that seems to promote this separation. Colin Kaepernick’s book talked about what it’s like being a black kid in a racially oppressive system, which garnered a lot of critical fame for its narrative. His NFL career has been at risk lately, but it’d be sad to see his literary career also take a hit.

Amid several speculations, Kaepernick’s career in the NFL still hangs in the balance. After Aaron Rodgers’ injury with the New York Jets, he drafted a letter asking the team to let him replace the veteran QB. Unfortunately, he was met with public embarrassment as the Jets refused his offer and decided to bank on Zach Wilson instead. The fans have been making a lot of appeals to the NFL teams to add Kaepernick to their squads, but there has been no news of his signing yet.

The B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League went a step further than the NFL and put Kaepernick on the negotiation list for their squad. Thus, we seem more likely to see the former QB in the Canadian League rather than the NFL. Even though he’s on the negotiation list, there are no confirmations if Kaepernick will join the league anytime soon, as he has a rigid stance on making a return to the NFL itself. But with his legal battle with the league, it doesn’t seem promising that the NFL would take him back with open arms.
