A sneak peek to the resume of Patriots legend, Bill Belichick? He carries six Super Bowl titles as the head coach against his name, and now he’s ready to take on the top coaching spot at the University of North Carolina. A well enough one to mark his return as the HC outside the NFL. Truth be told, not everyone sees it that way. First Tom Brady and now count James Jones in as well.
Jones thinks that Belichick at UNC will only work if he ‘changes‘: “You cannot bring Bill Belichick from the National Football League to College football, personality-wise,” the former wide receiver said after Belichick was appointed as the HC for UNC. “You have to be able to adapt to these kids, you have to be able to talk to these kids.”

Here’s the thing: Belichick’s success with the Patriots is driven by no-nonsense, discipline, and a bit of that “my way or the highway” mentality. And honestly, it worked like a charm for the head coach. The pro athletes who sit at the top of the game are a fine example of his charm. However, college football is a different beast altogether.
CFB players thrive on connection and motivation from their coach—there’s no doubt about that. Well, that’s contrary to Belichick’s tough-guy personality. “Bill Belichick has to build a relationship with these kids,” Jones further stated. “If we talk about anybody who played with Belichick in the National Football League, there’s no relationship.” Indeed! Looking at the less-experienced players in the CFB, they need the HC guidance not just on the field but off it, too. And that’s one reason Jones thinks that the New England team’s legend will fail at UNC. Of course, if he doesn’t change.
Tom Brady on Belichick being a college HC
Ask anyone, Belichick’s best student has to be Tom Brady. I mean, they’ve won six super bowls together—talk about a legendary duo. But for Brady, transitioning from running a tight ship in the NFL to coaching at UNC could be an adjustment.
“No,” Brady said. “I think there’s a lot of things he can do and obviously he’s tremendous and even showing his personality, but getting out there on the recruiting trail and getting all these college kids…” Brady was understandably skeptical, however, the deal is sealed now.

Belichick has signed a five-year contract with the University of North Carolina and the contract terms are expected to include whopping $10 million annually. And as it appears, the Patriots legend is now all prepared to develop some great players for the future. After all, the six-time super bowl winning coach is out again on the field, and this time without Tom Brady’s shadow over him.

Will he succeed, or will he need to change his approach, as Jones suggested? Only time will tell!
