Tom Brady’s career faced a surprise plot twist back in 2008, when he was a known face of the New England Patriots. The legendary quarterback suffered a knee injury that required “pretty serious surgery”, having a lingering impact on his health. However, the legend refused to allow this setback to take charge of his professional career. Even though initially he had witnessed career turmoil on his way to recovery, he had people who constantly had their backs to the quarterback.
The latest Apple TV+ docuseries, ‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots’, paid homage to the dark times of Brady. A part of it holds a mention of Brady’s season-ending injury.

The quarterback with three Super Bowl rings and a seemingly unbreakable streak of 111 consecutive starts suffered a catastrophic injury in 2008. What was supposed to be another legendary season for the Patriots, Brady succumbed to a hit from Chiefs’ safety, Bernard Pollard. The result came with a torn ACL and MCL that propelled his career to darkness. What followed the surgery was an infection that crippled the quarterback.
Reiterating his experience, Brady shared, “I lost a lot weight. I was very grey. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t move my knee. It was so swollen. But it was really tough. But I had great people there for me.” As mentioned by Brady’s sister Nancy Brady in the docuseries, with the guidance of Alex Guerrero, his trainer, and the support of his wife, Gisele Bündchen, Brady navigated through the challenging road back to the field.
Nancy revealed, “When you see someone who’s like doing what they love, you know despite the risk of bodily harm, you’re torn. But I know he was well taken care of. He had the work with Alex and the way he was taking care of his body. He had the love and support of Gisele, my parents and my sisters. He had everything that he needed to get back.”
The injury takes us down memory lane when Brady and his turbulent career walked hand-in-hand and when he found faith in Guerrero’s fitness method.
Triumphs, setbacks, fear- Brady overcame everything
Guerrero swore by the TB12 method that offered much more than being a training regimen with the focus on optimizing recovery while eliminating pain, giving rise to an elevated performance. Later on, taking inspiration from his trainer and the TB12 method, Brady merged his apparel venture, Brady Brand, with NoBull, the sportswear company. However, it was after the quarterback overcame his tumultuous career expedition.

Starting with his unexpected journey from being the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Brady’s journey has been a resilient one. Even though he has been the 2nd or 3rd backup QB for the Michigans, the Patriots saw something special in him and picked him up. In 2001, it was Patriots’ quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, who got injured that gave Brady a chance to exhibit his prowess. He secured his place as the team’s starter. However, the good times were short-lived.
He faced back-to-back struggles first during the 2008 Super Bowl, facing a devastating loss against the Giants and the injury that followed next year. Watching backup QB Matt Cassel excelling in his absence and gaining HC Bill Belichick’s trust, Brady feared losing everything he had achieved so far.
