Shedding light on the dynamic between the two iconic figures, Edelman suggested that Belichick’s tough coaching style may have been a calculated strategy to motivate Tom Brady. The former WR recalled moments when Brady thrived under pressure. “Everyone on that team knew Tom Brady played better pissed off,” Edelman emphasized. “I learned that probably in like 2014, when something didn’t go right in that playoff run. And he started getting on the guys. I think it was in that Baltimore game.”
“We were down 14 points for the first time, and he started getting pretty heated on the sideline and yelling at us. And then all of a sudden, he started balling out, and we started balling out. It was just kind of something that, you know, Tom would fabricate things in his own mind to make himself mad or to come up with motivation. I am not 100% sure if Bill didn’t understand that also,” Edelman said. However, he also acknowledged instances where Belichick’s approach may have crossed a line.

Despite Tom Brady’s unparalleled success, which included multiple Super Bowl victories, Bill Belichick remained unwavering in his coaching methods. According to Edelman, even when Brady was in his 15th year and had countless Super Bowl wins, Belichick would still get on him, but he wouldn’t change his approach.
Interestingly, the former WR noted that Belichick appeared to treat Cam Newton differently than he had treated Tom Brady, implying that the coach adjusted his approach based on the needs of his quarterbacks. “When Cam came in, he handled him differently because maybe that’s what he felt Cam needed,” Edelman said. “A lot of people have ideas of who Belichick is…I think he’s pulling strings and playing chess a lot more than people think.”
