Houston had a terrific night on Saturday. They won one of the most thrilling games in NCAA Tournament history, as the Cougars came back from a 14-point deficit with 8 minutes on the clock to defeat the favored Blue Devils 70-67. However, besides the winning moment, something else happened at Alamodome in San Antonio, which provoked many to express frustration. And JJ Watt was one among them.

It was one of those nights Houston fans will never forget. The team pulled off a historic win over Duke. And standing there, heart full, eyes on the moment… was Hakeem Olajuwon. We all know that Olajuwon is a legend – a name that means everything to that school. So, while attending the game, the legend watched the whole thing from start to finish. Then, like any proud alum would, he tried to join the team on the floor to celebrate. Of course, that moment should’ve been his, too. But here comes the twist, which was even condemned by Houston Texans legend, JJ Watt.

Sharing a video posted by reporter Chancellor Johnson, JJ Watt showed the fans how security guards told Hakeem Olajuwon no when he wanted to join his team for the celebration. In the viral video, fans could see Olajuwon being stopped from joining the team. In response, the legendary former NBA center looked stunned. One of the guys with him tried to step in, trying to explain. But the answer didn’t change. He didn’t make it onto the court. Hence, seeing all these, JJ Watt expressed his frustration with the security and wrote, “C’monnnnn Man. You let The Dream on the court. What are we doing here…” on his X post.

Indeed, what were they doing to a man who once put a hard-to-watch Houston on the map? He gave the school everything. Years of heart, sweat, and pride, by playing for Houston from 1981-84 before going on to the NBA Draft. There, he made them proud by becoming the first overall pick of the 1984 Draft. Obviously, Olajuwon himself wasn’t expecting such a move from the guards. That must have really left him confused!

However, there was a social media user who claimed Olajuwon’s behavior wasn’t up to the mark, too. To justify this, a person named Roy said on X, “I worked as a security guard at the Target Center back in college. Only one player ever hassled me over preventing a non-credentialed person backstage and that person was Hakeem Olajuwon. He yelled at me saying that I disrespected him. I was just doing my job.” This comment, as well as the recent hassle that happened at the court, has brought multiple opinions to the table.

And for JJ Watt? Oh, he has been a Houston fan who thinks what happened on Saturday with the basketball legend was wrong. After all, he has been a Houston fan for both basketball and football for a long time now.

What’s your perspective on:

Shouldn't legends like Hakeem Olajuwon have unrestricted access to celebrate with their teams?

JJ Watt is fully behind glory for Houston sports

In 2016, when the Houston Cougars football team opened the season with a win, JJ Watt expressed his pride in the young talents. During a press conference, he said that the team is “exciting” to watch and that they have got the city “fired up.” At that time, Watt was ESPN’s no. 1 ranked NFL player, and getting such a huge compliment from him was a big thing for the NCAA team.

On April 28, 2011, J.J. Watt was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round of the NFL Draft. He was picked at no. 11 overall. Soon, he became the star of the team. Watt not only set franchise records for sacks and forced fumbles, he was also selected to Pro Bowls five times. But that’s not where his legacy ends! In addition to that, Watt also became one of three NFL players to earn the Defensive Player of the Year title three times.

That’s why he is still called a legend. And this legend’s heart forever beats for Houston – be it a football squad or a basketball team!
