If there’s one thing J.J. Watt knows, it’s making a grand entrance—and exit. From terrorizing quarterbacks to charming soccer fans as Burnley’s co-owner, the man can’t sit still. After hanging up his cleats post-2022 season, the guy’s been everywhere—dropping jokes, hyping up Burnley, and reminding everyone he could still wreck an offensive line if he wanted to. But just when you thought he might settle down, he’s back in the game—just not the one you’d expect.

On Wednesday, the former Texans‘ defensive end announced his latest gig. And yeah, this time, we’re talking about the NFL and not soccer. Let’s cut to the chase: Watt is teaming up with the veteran sports announcer, Ian Eagle, as an “NFL on CBS” game analyst. Yeah, you read that absolutely right.

The NFL legend is now moving up the broadcasting ranks. Watt took to his official handle and broke the news with a funny caption, writing, “I’ll bring the fancy sauce. #NightHawk 🦅.” As per the reports, Watt and Eagle will begin announcing the games in the 2025-26 NFL season, with the pair operating as CBS’ No. 2 NFL team.

After hanging up his cleats after the 2022 season, Watt entered the broadcasting world and spent the past couple of years as an analyst on CBS Sports’ NFL Studio Show, “The NFL Today.” And if you’re thinking that Watt would be calling the game for the first time in the 2025 season—think again.

Because after spending two years with CBS Sports, Watt announced his first game in December last year, calling a Christmas Day game. His partner? Yeah, it’s Ian Eagle at that time too. Fast forward, and the man’s ready to replace Charles Davis, who has been calling the NFL games for CBS since 2020 on the network’s No. 2 broadcasting team.

To make this announcement more interesting, Watt even shared funny chats with Eagle on his IG handle. “Looks like the news is our partner! Can’t wait to get back in stadiums and call games with one of the best in the business,” Watt texted IanSee, being a veteran announcer, Ian is excited to work with Watt; there’s no doubt. As he replied, “Going to be a blast, can’t wait to get started!” But the kicker?

Well, Watt’s preparation for commentating includes a cold tub and sauna. Yeah, it sounds confusing—and trust me, even Ian Eagle had a ‘wait, what?’ moment as he asked, “Why would you need a cold tub and sauna to prepare for commentating?” Watt’s reply was simple, yet legendary: “If you fail to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.”

Can J.J. Watt's NFL insights shake up the broadcasting world and challenge the status quo?

Have an interesting take?

When Eagle told JJ that it’s commentating and they’d be sitting in a booth and talking football, the Texans’ legend simply asked, “How do you normally prepare?” In response, considering Ian Eagle has been in this business for years, he just sent a picture of some bananas and a few bottles of Saratoga brand water. That’s it. And yeah, Watt wasn’t expecting that answer.

But at the end of the day and amidst this funny back-and-forth, one thing’s sure: we’re going to see JJ Watt announcing the NFL games with Ian Eagle in 2025. And that news came after the former DE rips the NCAA’s Transfer Portal Policy.

JJ Watt is not happy with the NCAA’s transfer portal opening

March Madness is in full swing—buzzer-beaters, upsets, and all the chaos we love. But just when college hoops should be stealing the spotlight, the NCAA decided to throw a curveball. Now, if you’re thinking to soak in the madness—just take a step back. Because the NCAA cracked open the transfer portal mid-tournament.

Think of it like this: right after the NFL wild-card weekend, the NFL started the free agency. A total distraction and doesn’t make any sense. That’s exactly what JJ Watt believes. After the news hit the headlines, Watt didn’t hold back, took to his official ‘X’ handle, and ranted against the NCAA’s decision.

“The NCAA transfer portal opening before March Madness ends (same as football portal opening before bowl season ends) is preposterous. Literally cannibalizing your own sport,” he wrote. “Imagine NFL free agency starting the Monday after Wild Card Weekend …,” he wrote in his tweet.

Arkansas’ head coach, John Calipari, chimed in as he agreed with the ex-Texans‘ defensive end. See, Calipari expressed his frustration while dealing with student transfer negotiations and preparing for the Sweet 16 at the same time. “Welcome to my world,” Calipari told reporters. “So Monday we’re really preparing for a game and we’re having individual meetings about ‘Are you coming back?'”

Rings a bell? That’s something like the last NFL season. Yeah, when the offensive and defensive coordinators were negotiating for the head coaching role with other teams. While their team was out there grinding in the postseason. Because let’s be real—amidst the transfer portal, the recruiting is surely going to get complicated. The reason?

Well, it’s simple as that: the teams have to focus on the tournament as well as finding new players at the same time. Diabolical. No wonder JJ Watt and John Calipari are calling it out. And let’s be real—they’re not the only ones.
