Jacoby Jones' legacy: Did he get the recognition he truly deserved during his career?

Remember that Baltimore Ravens WR in the run-up to the Super Bowl XLVII in 2013? The one who scored a double overtime win with his “Mile High Miracle?” Jacoby Jones caught a 70-yard TD from QB Joe Flaco in the last minute of the AFC divisional game. Thanks to his abilities, the Ravens were able to triumph over the Denver Broncos, paving the way to their 34-31 SB win against the San Francisco 49ers. But only gloom and sorrow pervade today.

The world will never forget Jacoby Jones, who suddenly passed away on July 14 at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana. While the cause of his death isn’t mentioned, this abrupt development has put everyone in a state of shock, including former NFL star Robert Griffin III. They may not have played together, but the influence of legends like Jones spans beyond his batches.

RG III, who put his name in for an NFL QB spot a year after getting out of the NFL in 2021, has nothing but respect for Jacoby Jones. The 34-year-old mourned the NFL veteran’s death as he paid tribute on his X account. He penned a tearful message recounting how he used to be when he was among us, “He was a triple threat. Funny, fast and could dance. He will be missed and was taken from us way too soon.”

Everyone is still left in shock. Why? Jones appeared hale and hearty when he celebrated his 40th birthday on July 11. His former team paid tribute to him on Sunday as they released a statement that reads, “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.” It’s a shame someone like him is no more. And RG III isn’t the only star shocked by Jones’ demise.

Raven’s head coach, John Harbaugh, who coached Jones while he was at Baltimore, wrote, “His spirit, enthusiasm and love for people were powerful. He was a light.” For NFL DE JJ Watt, just one season playing together in 2011 was enough to hail Jones as a jolly guy. He wrote via social media, “Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones.”

Pat McAfee also had some last words as the world laid Jones to eternal rest. In his X post, he wrote: “Jacoby Jones was an absolute legend.. he was beloved by literally everybody he met and lit up every room/field he walked into/onto. Rest easy my brother.. we will miss your presence.” As we stand together with Jones’ family in this time of grief and pain, we hope his soul finds peace.
