It was Isabella Strahan’s twin sister, Sophia, who first told their parents about her deteriorating health. She called Michael Strahan and his ex-wife, Jean Muggli, after Isabella told her that she was coughing up blood. After she was taken to the ER on her 19th birthday, it was discovered that Isabella had a fast-growing tumor in her cerebellum and needed immediate surgery. Sophia then took care of Isabella as she underwent rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, even pushing her around in a wheelchair. With Isabella going through unimaginable hardship, her sister tried her best to “make her feel normal.” In the meantime, to connect with the outside world, Isabella decided to take up a project of her own.

Sophia tried to help Isabella maintain a sense of normalcy by sharing the drama going on with their friends or talking about what was happening in the news. “Something she would say to me quite a few times was like, ‘I just don’t feel normal. I want to feel normal. Nothing about my life right now is normal. ‘I think something that I tried to do best was to make her feel normal,” Sophia said in an interview with PEOPLE earlier this year. As it turns out, Isabella was also trying her best to make things normal in her life as she started vlogging to document her recovery journey.

Isabella talked about the early signs of her medulloblastoma in her first vlog and continued to share her ordeal through chemotherapy in real-time. Through this, she was able to connect with various cancer survivors, especially those her age. Surprisingly, though, despite being by her side the entire time, Sophia didn’t watch any of her sister’s vlogs. This revelation was dropped by Isabella during a podcast appearance earlier this month.

Isabella made her way to the Beyond the Battlefront podcast and joined host Noor Hassan to talk about her cancer diagnosis while in college. During the discussion, she also dived into her decision to share her story publicly through vlogging. Reflecting on the decision she said, “I really love vlogging just because I met so many amazing people through it who were going through the same thing and just wanted to reach out. So that was like a positive, people say I helped them, but I feel a lot of people helped me.

“But just kinda just vlogging reflecting back. I would pull up YouTube on our TV at home. I don’t think that my twin sister has actually  seen any of my vlogs, so I’m like, ‘number one unsupporter over here.’ I’m like ‘How have you not seen a single one’? I was like, really?’ She is like, ‘I don’t know! I don’t know!’”

Isabella kept her followers updated about her recovery process and would share the details of what she was going through. Last year, following her first chemotherapy session, Isabella talked about the difficult ordeal she had to go through in her vlog.

“My whole mouth feels like I got one giant root canal,” she shared in a February 16 vlog. “Every single tooth just ripped out and not even surgically put back in. My jaw hurts, the bottom of my tongue hurts. It hurts when I gulp water.” Despite, not watching her vlogs, Sophia continued to be a massive pillar of support for Isabella during her recovery.

After a second round of chemotherapy left Isabella light-headed and having difficulty walking, Sophia helped her move around in a wheelchair. Even though she hasn’t watched her sister’s vlog, Sophia did make an appearance quite a few times in the YouTube videos.

Following her chemo sessions, she had to undergo cold therapy, which is often done to help patients reduce peripheral neuropathy by applying ice to their hands and feet. In one vlog where Isabella shared a clip of her feet and hands in buckets of ice, Sophia can be seen saying, “This is what the world wants to see!”

What’s your perspective on:

Isabella Strahan's fight is inspiring, but why hasn't Sophia watched her vlogs? What's your take?

Have an interesting take?

Isabella has said Sophia was by her side as she battled cancer and even helped her learn to walk again after her brain surgery as part of the rehabilitation process. Isabella’s remarkable journey reached full circle when she was declared cancer-free in July last year and Sophia once again took it upon herself to celebrate their 20th birthday with a trip to Disneyland.

Meanwhile, for Isabella, her vlogs are a way for her to soak in how far she has come ever since her cancer diagnosis. “I love just watching my vlogs even now just to see the progress. I can really tell my attitude my progress changed from the beginning to the end. It’s really fun actually, to have it documented to see how my life was for a long time. So, I actually kind of really enjoy having the vlogs, reflecting on it and just seeing ‘Oh life really wasn’t great then.’ But then you can feel like in three more vlogs that I got a little better, it’s kinda cool.”

Life has gotten better for Isabella over time. Now, Isabe͏lla is getting back into her groove. They never mentioned in the fairy tale that there was once a warrior princess, right? Well, Isabella is totally that warrior princess, bouncing back to being the amazing person she was before because cancer just can’t take her down.
