Oh, my word! A Patrick Mahomes horror show at the Super Bowl with a 3-peat on the line. Six sacks, two interceptions, and a QB rating of 11.4. Only in your wildest dreams were those things possible. However, courtesy of a revenge-seeking Eagles, Mahomes was merely a puppet to the Eagles’ defense. His mistakes on football’s biggest stage only played into the hands of the humiliating defeat the Chiefs had to encounter. You could say the whole team underperformed, but when your QB lost the plot early into a Super Bowl, there was no way back for the Chiefs. That’s what Steve Young believes.

Hopping on the Dan Patrick Show, the 49ers’ legendary QB pointed out where Mahomes went wrong against the Eagles. “It felt like he would..he was looking for something great or amazing or super. You know, like the Superman stuff of his early days when he really just dropped it off, get it out blitz coverage, you know, I mean.” See, the thing is, Mahomes did throw a few Superhuman throws, but all of them came when the game was already out of their grip. Two of them were TD passes to Xavier Worthy, one from a 24-yard pass and the other a 50-yard bomb.

However, the damage had already been done in the first half, as Young referred to those two interceptions Mahomes threw that supposedly killed the game. “He threw the pick six. He got hit and threw the next pick, and all of a sudden, it’s 24 or nothing, and You’ve just put yourself in a bind you can’t get out of.” Well, the three-time Super Bowl Champion chasing GOAT just outright embarrassed himself, throwing two interceptions.

His first one was a pick-six at the hands of rookie CB Cooper DeJean. Mahomes got pressurized in the pocket but had plenty of time to himself to pick his targets. However, all he managed to come up with was DeJean’s quick hands, who returned it for a TD, putting the Eagles up by 17 points. Then came his second pick, which was once again Mahomes’ fault. Zack Baun intercepted his risky throw deep into their 6-yard line. Well, two plays after that interception, the Eagles scored another TD. With those mistakes in quick succession, the game had already turned into a rout 24-0.

Just taking a glance at Mahomes’s numbers in that nightmarish of a first half would help you get the complete picture. Only 23 yards and a 10.7 QB rating. Mahomes dropped his worst game when the Chiefs needed him to be at his best like he is usually. Even the two-time Super Bowl MVP knew where he fell short and owned it up like a man.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Mahomes' Super Bowl blunder expose his weaknesses, or was it just an off day for the star?

Have an interesting take?

It’s never a good look for a superstar QB to lose on the biggest stage. Whatever narrative they have built for themselves goes straight into the trenches. Their credibility gets questioned for that one-bust game. Ignoring the 100s, they played at the top of their game. Well, one of those moments came in Super Bowl LIX for a franchise QB who was playing his 5th Super Bowl in just 6 years. But in the NFL, no matter how great you are throughout the season.

One bad game and everything crumbles in your face. And that’s what happened with Mahomes, who shouldered all the blame post-game, “Credit to the Eagles. They played better than us from start to finish. We didn’t start how we wanted to. Obviously, the turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. I didn’t play to my standard, and I have to be better the next time.”

Yeah, right, those turnovers in the first half when the Chiefs were already down by 10 points. Mahomes also apologized for them specifically, “I threw two interceptions. I threw a pick-six, and I threw a pick that they returned to the 14-yard line. They scored immediately after. When you give a team 14 points, especially a really good football team, a Super Bowl football team, not a lot of good things happen.” Well, good things were never in the picture.

Perhaps, the clash got worse with Jalen Hurts throwing a 46-yard TD to DeVonta Smith. This gave the Eagles a gargantuan 34-0 lead, which indeed rubbed salt into the wounds of the Chiefs. But Patrick Mahomes, in his parting message to the Chiefs faithful, did say, “We will be back.” So maybe there’s nothing to worry about in the long run. And you could say this was just a blip for the reigning Super Bowl Champions at a historic stage.
