And the saga of firing the coaches continues! Originally, Jimbo Fisher’s massive payout deal by Texas stole the show, but others weren’t too far behind. Right from Bill Belichick announcing the end of his era to Jim Harbaugh’s loyalty test with Michigan, there are several excellent coaches to fill the vacant position for the LA Chargers.

The expectations were high, but they were let down badly, resulting in the team agreeing to fire not one, but two vital coordinators of their team. Head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco have bid their goodbyes. As of now, outside linebackers coach Giff Smith is the interim head coach. Yet the vacancy presents alluring prospects for the many head coaches who are on the lookout.

Looking at the present landscape of the NFL, Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick appear to be the top prospects, but they’ll be ruled out, as per Shawne Merriman, a former Chargers star. Having closely worked with the franchise for 5 seasons, Merriman understands the current needs of the team, a coach who would resonate with the players, not only in their playing patterns but also in terms of age.

Justin Herbert brings a ton of potential for the teams, which often goes unused, the primary problem. As per Merriman, if the organization were to hire Harbaugh or Belichick, the age gap would end up birthing the same issue in another form, if not this. “I just don’t see Bill Belichick as the right move,” opined the former LB. Despite Belichick being ‘one of the greatest coaches in history’, he still won’t fit in with Herbert’s explosive playing style, per Merriman.

The reason why Belichick and Harbaugh won’t be a good prospect

Merriman’s primary concern, as well as the team’s, was Justin Herbert’s potential going to waste. And older coaches not being the most resourceful about it. “You want to bring in somebody for one that’s going to be able to take Justin Herbert to the next level or one be a good leader, be able to relate to the players but also put Justin Herbert in a position to do what he can do best big explosive plays,” was what Shawne Merriman thought.

If he’s to be believed, the team should rather opt for younger coaches, ones around the age of players, who are equally explosive in their playing patterns, like the last piece in the jigsaw puzzle.
