But Underwood won’t just be remembered for his contributions to the NFL and the Longhorns, where he is a Hall of Famer. He was more than a player representing the Oilers. Underwood was a judge who dedicated 40 years of his life to serving the State of Texas. It all started with him pursuing his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center while he was still an Oiler. He then went on to practice law privately before being appointed as the first judge of the 284th District Court.
His judgment and leadership were so valued that three Texas Governors appointed him as the Presiding Judge of the Second Administrative Region. Well, Underwood’s passion went on to extend beyond the gridiron and the courtroom. Away from serving justice, Underwood was a strong advocate for troubled and vulnerable youth. This led to him laying the foundation stone of the Student Transition and Recovery Program (STAR).
What he did was simply groundbreaking. His STAR initiative led to the prevention of middle school students’ incarceration, which later expanded to multiple states. Actually, his work for juvenile justice didn’t end with STAR—it was only the mere beginning. Underwood played a massive role in bringing the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), where he focused on changing young lives.
