West Virginia University (WVU) thought it could easily secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Why? Because of its 6-10 record against top-10 teams, including Gonzaga, Kansas, and Iowa State. In fact, the Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 10-10 conference record, ranking No. 8 in the Big 12. Everything sounds fine, right? But wait… it wasn’t enough for the NCAA! And Pat McAfee is definitely not entertaining it.
According to the reports, the NCAA snubbed West Virginia University’s men’s basketball team from the 2025 tournament. Pat McAfee, a former West Virginia kicker (2005–2008), is stunned to hear the new decision. He shared a story on his official Instagram account, featuring an X post from Chris Anderson. The tweet mentioned, “#WVU is listed as the very first team left out of the NCAA Tournament team. #WVU had SIX Quad One victories this season. The last four teams in – UNC, Texas, Xavier and San Diego State – also had six Quad One wins…… COMBINED.” McAfee captioned it well while re-sharing it.
Sharing the same, Pat McAfee wrote a strong 3-word message – “WVU GOT SCREWED.” The former Indianapolis Colts punter seems clearly frustrated to not see his ex-university making it to the NCAA tournament of the year. Not only that!

Pat McAfee further shared a tweet on his official X account. There too, he wrote, “WVU got screwed. Of course!” He even shared the names of the first four teams who are out of this tournament—West Virginia, Indiana, Ohio State, and Boise State.
We all know that Pat McAfee is dealing with a lot on his professional side. The 37-year-old recently faced backlash on the national anthem episode in the Canada incident. In fact, many online users asked ESPN to fire him from the show hosting. However, later ESPN didn’t take any decision regarding McAfee, and even the man himself apologized giving a solid reason. But once again, this time, another incident has surely caught his frustration. The recent snubbing is not worth it as per him…..as per many! But you know what’s worse here?
What’s your perspective on:
With WVU's strong record, is the NCAA selection process flawed or just biased?
Have an interesting take?
Pat McAfee’s WVU snubbed; North Carolina in?
North Carolina had a weak resume with only one Quad 1 win all season, and still, the 2025 NCAA Tournament selected them. On the flip side, teams like West Virginia and Indiana had 6 Quad 1 and 4 Quad 1 wins, respectively, but still, they didn’t make the cut. Sad! That’s why Pat McAfee, like others, is frustrated too. Thanks to all the drama, UNC saved its spot.
We all know that North Carolina barely made it into the 2025 NCAA Tournament as a No. 11 seed, landing in the First Four after a rough season. Their loss to Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals stung, but they caught a break when Memphis defeated UAB in the AAC title game. If UAB had won, UNC would have been the first team left out.

The selection process was tense. Keith Gill, the vice chair of the selection committee, led discussions about UNC since committee chair Bubba Cunningham had to step aside due to his affiliation with the school. On Selection Sunday, North Carolina was the last team in. So, obviously, not everyone is happy.

The Tar Heels had just one Quad 1 win all season, while teams like West Virginia and Indiana—both left out—had stronger resumes in that category. Pat McAfee’s favorite West Virginia even won four Quad 1 games without star Tucker DeVries, but its lower NET and KenPom rankings hurt its case.
UNC’s inclusion follows a pattern of ACC teams benefiting from the process. Last year, Virginia got in despite weaker rankings. With no “bid thieves” this time – unexpected conference tournament winners who take away at-large spots – UNC had a clearer path. Still, the optics aren’t great. Cunningham insists the process was fair, but his role as committee chair and UNC’s controversial selection will definitely raise eyebrows. Indeed, fans of snubbed teams and even Pat McAfee aren’t going to let this one slide easily. What do you think?
