Colin Kaepernick is not looking to be signed as the Jets‘ starting quarterback, or the first backup, he wishes to be signed into a position not many seasoned quarterbacks would opt for. He expressed his wishes through a letter dedicated to the New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas that was recently made public by multi-platinum rapper J. Cole via an Instagram post since he wanted the people and all organizations should know the truth.”

After Aaron Rodger’s season-ending Achilles injury early in Week 1, Head Coach Robert Saleh declared the team’s faith in their second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Zach Wilson to step into the much larger shoes of the Hall of Famer. However, his inability to live up to expectations has generated hope in Colin Kaepernick, who wishes to offer a risk-free contingency plan. Kaepernick’s letter has attracted a wide range of responses from NFL fans with some calling it “sad and desperate,” while others hoping that, “there’s a spot out there for my boy Kap.”

Previously Cole has been credited with tipping Caron Butler on signing Caleb Martin to the Miami Heat, who contributed significantly to the team’s journey to the NBA finals. In Kaepernick’s case, he persuaded the free agent to share the latter’s letter dedicated to the Jets general manager Joe Douglas, seeking a position in the Jets practice team. I asked Colin @kaepernick7 if I could share this letter with the world. He was reluctant,” wrote the rapper in the caption before going on to justify the former 49ers quarterback’s dedication, hard work, and desire to rejoin the NFL.

In Kaepernick’s letter to Douglas, he highlighted several advantages he could offer, notably the ability to gain a more accurate understanding of the “more mobile/athletic/versatile quarterbacks” the team is set to encounter in Weeks 4, 5, and 6. Additionally, he expressed his desire for the franchise to assess his on-field capabilities. “I’m writing you in hopes that you can imagine a much different approach involving me; I would be honored and extremely grateful for the opportunity to come in and lead the practice squad,” he said, hoping to be able to help strengthen the defense.

Kaepernick has remained without an NFL team since 2016, a result of his controversial protest against racism and police brutality, which involved kneeling during the national anthem. Despite his prolonged absence from the NFL, he has persistently pursued opportunities to return to the sport. His desire to rejoin an organization that he had previously criticized, including a discrimination lawsuit against the organization in 2017, drew polarizing fan responses with someone saying, “bro said the nfl was like slavery but begging to be back in it 😂,” while someone said, “Too bad he killed his career and mocked the country he wants to benefit from. Lame.”

Others supported his cause and applauded his move saying, “Should’ve never been out of the league. YES COLE 👏🏻”, while someone else said, “Agreed!! King Cap Let’s Gooooo!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿.” A fan supported his display of protest against racism and his possible addition to the Jets’ team saying, “As a @nyjets fan, I think this would be a great addition to the team! And it gives the NFL an opportunity to be better by bringing him back and showing that the organization can move past his peaceful display for social and civil justice. If the Jets or the NFL pass this up it sends an even bigger message to those who side with Kap and all other Americans that stand against social injustice.”

Many including radio personality Charlamagne Tha God deemed Kaepernick’s letter “tragically sad and downright pathetic” and called out J. Cole for speaking on his behalf, “And I hate that he can never speak for himself. He always got somebody else speaking for him or putting out his message for him. That’s so wack to me.”  Kaepernick is yet to receive a reply from the Jets though he has been reportedly signed to the Canadian Football League’s B.C. Lions’ negotiation list.
