It’s breaking news of the college football circuit. After spending 50 years with different teams in the NFL, and winning 6 Super Bowls with the GOAT Tom Brady in the middle, Bill Belichick has moved to the University of North Carolina. The league is trying to find the reason why he was not given any coaching gig in the NFL.

Mark Evans sat with Mark Schelereth on The Stinkin Truth Podcast on December 12. While Evans enquired if the New England Patriots CEO Robert Kraft spread bad word about the legendary coach, Schlereth claimed it’s about the age. He said, “I think age has something to do with it but what I always say, you know, I mean how many owners think that getting a young offensive mind is like taking Viagra.” He then also took a shot at millennials who often say that the league has changed.

It’s not about the age only, but more about the power and domination over the team as well. Other team owners have seen how he ran the Patriots when he was there. It was a herculean task to get any news from the locker room. Bill Belichick used to talk to the media, give updates, and make all the decisions. That doesn’t work anymore.

However, both analysts also agreed that there could be many teams that might have offered him a head coach contract if he had waited. The Jets and the Bengals were the front-runners. But we know the legendary coach’s antics. He follows his own heart.

Schlereth then pointed out some challenges that he might face at the UNC. For now, everyone is celebrating.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the NFL ageist, or is Belichick's move to UNC a strategic masterstroke?

Mike Schelereth warns Bill Belichick about UNC appointment

When the coach was asked if he wanted to move to North Carolina, he said that he was happy as he started his career there with his father. He further added, “I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times.” That’s great.

Bill Belichick further added that he would run an NFL program at the UNC. And he brought Michael Lombardi, his former Patriots assistant at UNC as the GM. But this ‘NFL program’ thing didn’t sit too well with Mark Schlereth, as he mentioned the challenge to the Patriots legend.

He mentioned that in college football, the players can beat their rivals based on their sheer physical strength alone, which doesn’t happen in the NFL. He then said, “In the NFL, everybody’s fairly equal when it comes to talent. In college football, there are the halves and the have-nots, so you can out-athlete your opponent.” So the coach would need more systems in place than he initially thought.

Also, there is another issue. That’s more about the visual appeal of the head coach. Both agreed that young college boys like coaches who dress casually like Deion Sanders, the Colorado coach, while Bill Belichick comes across as a stricter, disciplinarian coach. Well, that seems understandable.

At the UNC, it is a jubilation. They are ready for the NFL legend and teach them the nuances to become great. Maybe he would find someone and transform him into a bigger legend than Brady. Who knows?
