Bob Knight, the legendary college basketball head coach, passed away at 83 after a prolonged illness. The news of his passing came as a major blow not only to the basketball world but to all that he’s inspired through his journey as “the General.” Former Indianapolis Colts punter and kickoff specialist Pat McAfee jotted down a tear-jerking note as a tribute to the former Indiana Hoosiers head coach. 

Not only was Bob Knight a star basketball player himself, but he also showed he was more capable as a head coach with three NCAA Division I championships and an overall head coach record of 903-371 (.709). The basketball veteran had been suffering from a prolonged illness and was hospitalized since April. Bob Knight may be gone, but he’s left a major impression on so many popular faces today.

The news of Bob Knight’s passing came like a crushing weight on so many people, including Pat McAfee, who posted a long tribute to the legend. He added a vintage video clip of the beloved head coach in his prime years and captioned, “Rest Easy to a man who has impacted so many lives in Indiana and around the College Basketball world.

The family of the deceased basketball legend announced the news on Wednesday night about his passing. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington surrounded by his family.” Before becoming head coach, Bob Knight played as a forward at Ohio State from 1959 to 1962. In 1965, he became the youngest coach at a Division I school at 24 with the Army Black Knights.

A legend in the making, Bob Knight made an impression on Pat McAfee before he even met or knew him. McAfee began with how he came to know about Bob Knight when he was drafted by the Colts in 2009. He recalled how the state loves basketball, and it was because of the head coach. He even admitted that he watches Bob Knight’s YouTube videos because “he’s an absolute character.. 1 of 1..”

It was none other than Bob Knight who led the US Olympic team to a gold medal in 1984. It seems Pat McAfee isn’t the only one who is personally affected by Bob Knight’s tragic news. Indiana’s current coach and former Hoosiers player Mike Woodson asserted, “I am so blessed that he saw something in me as a basketball player. He influenced my life in ways I could never repay… He will be remembered as one of the greatest ever.

Another former Army player of the late college basketball Hall of Famer and coach expressed his grief on social media. Mike Krzyzewski paid respect to the legend, saying, “We lost one of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball today.” Bob Knight was a three-time Hall of Famer of Naismith Basketball, College Basketball, and IU Athletics.
