The Sugar Bowl game between the University of Georgia and the University of Notre Dame took place on Thursday. However, even before the matchup, the game and broadcasting channel fell into controversy, which provoked many, including Brett Favre to make a remark about it.

ESPN, who was broadcasting the Sugar Bowl game on January 2, 2025, fell into controversy for not playing the National Anthem before the game. In fact, not even a moment of silence was shown by New Orleans’s Caesars Superdome broadcaster, which further sparked the controversy.

Hence, criticizing the same, the former NFL quarterback, Brett Favre, took to his official X account, and said, “I heard: There was no televised National Anthem for Sugar Bowl yesterday. Instead a DEI message by @Allstate CEO.” So, being frustrated, Favre concluded his statements with a scathing attack, by saying, “Woke is a joke.

Without any doubt, the Sugar Bowl of college football was more than just a game this time. It came after a ter–or attack in New Orleans, taking 14 lives, which eventually forced the game for a 24-hour delay. As players and fans gathered at the Superdome, everyone paused to honor those lost. Hence, they took a moment of silence. But not all moments were handled with the same care.

SportsCenter, airing before the game, cut to a commercial right before the national anthem and the silence began. When they returned, it was the mid-anthem. It felt awkward like something sacred had been interrupted. ESPN’s snubbing the Anthem took a controversial turn soon, and hence, Brett Favre and many others took to social media to express their discontentment.

Joining Brett Favre, football fans slammed ESPN!

Brett Favre made sure to express his feelings on the skipped National Anthem in the Sugar Bowl. But not only the former Packers’ quarterback, but even other football fans came forward to slam ESPN for this incident. For instance, one fan said, “that was weird…,” expressing their confusion on the issue. And comments like, “I missed this aspect. Yeah, that’s not cool. The National Anthem is practically special in times of grief,” clearly suggest that what happened on Thursday wasn’t right at all.

On the other hand, someone expressed their frustration by admitting that now they are not left with any hope. They commented: “@espn and their parent company @Disney are to blame….they WILL NOT TELEVISE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM ON THEIR SPORTING EVENTS…..Do you think they care? I think not….” Someone too chimed in this, bringing a political aspect to it: “What an incredibly tone-deaf decision by ESPN. They are so deep into the woke Leftist ideology.

Apart from these, another one brought up the famous Colin Kaepernick incident, they said, “I stopped watching football after Kaepernick took a knee. I know nothing about football anymore.” Some political mix-ups and ideologies in the sports seem to make fans lose interest in it. Hence, many are not in favor of it, and hence, they requested Brett Favre and others to stand up for it. For example, a person wrote, “Get it together, Allstate!!!”

Nevertheless, prayers are being offered for the victims, and fans are also hoping that nothing controversial ever happens again.
