Is Brock Purdy the real deal, or just a flash in the pan against the Cardinals?

The nickname ‘Mr. Irrelevant‘ may not justify the performance Brock Purdy produced this week against the Cardinals. Having his team led by 10 points, Purdy racked up 14-of-27 passes for 188 yards. Even his 4-yard TD pass to TE George Kittle was the pick of the bunch as seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady questioned the 49ers QB’s title.

Calling the plays as a broadcaster for the fifth week, Brady expressed his thoughts about Purdy leading the line for the 49ers, “I’m sitting on the sideline, and I’m like, How is Mr Irrelevant carving us up? Is our defense that bad? It turns out that Brock is just that good.” Although Brady may have referred to the last time they met when he was in the Bucs playing his final season. He fondly remembers how Purdy doesn’t justify the title he got upon entering the NFL.

However, this isn’t even the first time Tom Brady has decided to praise the 49ers’ QB, as he had similar thoughts last season. Going back to the NFC championship clash against the Lions in the 2023 season, Purdy led the 49ers to a 34-31 victory, thereby catching the eye of the “GOAT.” Expressing his thoughts on the Let’s Go! Podcast, Brady stated, “Done a great job. Yesterday, I thought he played so well in the second half. He made some big plays with his feet, moving the b— down the field, and I thought that he led the team to a great victory. So, I think he’s done terrific.”

Although Brady praised Purdy for his performances in the second half, the 49ers QB didn’t have a great first half. He managed to pass for just 93 yards while adding two interceptions to his tally. But in the next half, he was a different gravy altogether as he added 174 yards while tossing a touchdown to his total. Even though the 49ers didn’t manage to secure the Super Bowl against the Chiefs last season, they got Mr. Irrelevant doing things nobody would have predicted.

Over the first 25 games he has started for the 49ers, Purdy has racked up a sensational passer rating of 112.6. Even his 19-6 record is something that can excite anyone supporting the 49ers this season. When it came to opening up about his performances, the 2o22 Mr Irrelevant shared, “The challenge for me now is, man, how can I continue to have that mentality of having the chip on my shoulder and competing every down in the game for four quarters?”

Have an interesting take?

Having entered the NFL as the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Purdy enjoyed his best plays as a starter last season. Having led the 49ers to a Super Bowl match, Purdy finished with a passer rating of 113 while racking up 9.6 yards per pass. His 4,280 passing yards was a record for the 49ers, who didn’t have a player of his calibre for many seasons.

Even this season, Purdy has recorded 1,182 passing yards while producing 9.3 yards for each passing attempt. As Brady chipped in to praise the QB, will he be able to continue his strong start to his NFL career? For now, it seems he is thriving in the role he has earned in the Bay Area.
