What if someone asks you who your ‘Scariest NFL Team’ is this season? Well, a bunch of you could probably say the Chiefs or the Bills. Like they are scary, we can give you that. The Chiefs have yet again shown they are taking their 3-peat dreams pretty seriously, winning 15 out of their 17 regular season games. And what about the Bills, you say? Well, they are one of the only two teams who have defeated the Chiefs in a regular season game and have also clinched the AFC East title for five consecutive seasons. So they have clearly proven on a given day the Chiefs are indeed beatable. But let’s just say neither of them is the ‘Scariest NFL Team’ in the books of Michael Irvin.
Yeah, that’s right. The former Cowboys WR feels the Scariest NFL Team this season is by far the King of the North. Umm, No. We are not talking about Game of Thrones. Irvin’s pick is the Detroit Lions, winners of the NFC North. As revealed on Speak on FS1: “For me, it is Detroit.” Now, the 58-year-old didn’t just put his choice forward without giving some solid reasons to back his claim.
First of all, Irvin claimed no matter how hard you try to beat Detroit, they would just find a way to win, “How many different ways can you beat me? And they can beat you in so many different ways. No matter what you take away.” He then went on to portray a few examples, citing Jared Goff, “This guy has five interceptions, you still win the game.” Well, Irvin is not joking. That happened for real in week 10 against the Texans.

Goff threw five interceptions, but the Lions still won 26-23. Now, Irvin didn’t just stop there as he went to add other examples. Like if Goff throws 5 TDs, they still win the game. But moving away from Goff and the offense for a second. Irvin did reveal the X factor, which is their defense that makes the Lions a serious contender for the Super Bowl LIX. Praising Aaron Gleen, the DC of the Lions, for holding teams up even after losing so many players regularly.
Then he said something that every sports fan can relate to, “Defense wins championship.” And right now. It’s there for everyone to see and judge for themselves. The Lions clinched the No.1 seed from the NFC by holding the Vikings to just 9 points (no TDs) in week 18.

With so much on the line, everyone thought this year’s last Sunday Night’s regular season game would be a blast. And it was but for the Lions, who simply blew away the Vikings by winning 31-9. Yeah, that’s right. All 9 points that the Vikings scored in Detroit came through field goals. The Lions’ defense simply shut off Sam Darnold-led Vikings. Darnold completed just 18 of his 41 passes for 166 yards. The Vikings went 0-4 in their red zone trips. Like at one point in the first half, Darnold failed to connect six straight passes across two offensive drives.
This forced the Purple and Gold to settle for field goals and keep the scoreboard moving. Besides Darnold, his most trusted receiver, Justin Jefferson, had a game to forget just on the eve of the playoffs. Jefferson finished his outing, catching just 3 passes for 54 yards on seven targets. On the day when Jahmyr Gibbs ran wild on the Vikings offense with 139 rushing yards on 23 carries and 3 TDs. The Vikings running game was almost non-existent.
They only put up 120 rushing yards, with Cam Akers scoring half of it (65 rushing yards). This display of sheer dominance must have sent a strong message to other NFL teams. Because Detroit is surely coming for their first Super Bowl appearance after narrowly missing out last year against the Niners.
