Is the Cowboys’ legacy under threat? In 1979, when the Dallas Cowboys stepped up to play their first game, CBS’s television announcer, Pat Summerall, introduced the team as America’s Team on national television. Although that matchup was a regular one where Jerry Jones’ team won against the St. Louis Cardinals, the title remained with Dallas. However, according to Michael Irvin, this legacy is at risk now! How?
Well, Michael Irvin joined the It Is What It Is podcast this week to talk about his former team, the Cowboys. During the discussion, Irvin pointed out that the Kansas City Chiefs are stealing his former team’s legacy. And for this, he blamed none other than the pop icon, Taylor Swift, and WNBA superstar, Caitlin Clark. In the episode, Michael Irvin said, “We’re going to talk about Caitlin Clark and Taylor Swift at the Kansas City Chiefs game. They’re trying to make that (happen). Those are two good old American girls. They’re trying to make those Chiefs, they’re trying to steal America’s title.” Swift and Clark were seen together at Arrowhead in the divisional round game against the Texans.
In the newly shared clip on Instagram by FlamingoWedits and Michael Irvin, host rapper Cam’ron asked the former NFLer about the Cowboys’ recent struggles. He took a playful jab at their lack of conference championship appearances. To which Irvin added a point on how long it has been since they won the title. He highlighted that the last one came in 1995 when he was playing wide receiver for the team. Then, after a while, the tone got more animated, as Irvin connected it to pop culture.

The WNBA star came to support the Chiefs where she had a great time celebrating with the iconic singer. As these highly celebrated women attract more viewers to the Chiefs and their high-profile games, Michael Irvin believes the ‘America’s Team’ title might shift from Dallas to KC. No doubt, the Chiefs have gained more popularity than other teams since Swift entered into the picture. According to reports, Swift has brought nearly 20% of America’s interest to the games. Of course, being on the verge of a historic 3-peat helps as well.
So, does that mean the America’s Team title is shifting to KC from the original titleholder? That remains to be seen! Until then, Michael Irvin is not stepping back from sharing his stance on Taylor Swift and another popular Chiefs figure!
Michael Irvin puts the spotlight on a WAG
Without any doubt, Michael Irvin is a loyal Cowboys fan. He hopes to see another Super Bowl for the team someday after the win in 1996. That’s probably why Irvin can’t stop himself from making some jabs against the Chiefs and some of their members.
Before pointing at Taylor Swift for trying to steal away the Cowboys’ title, the former WR once pointed out Brittany Mahomes in 2023. Back then, he said, “People have already gotten on Patrick Mahomes’ wife because they thought she would like too much of the spotlight, and now she gets it – Brittany Mahomes really wants Taylor Swift as her bestie.” With this comment, Michael Irvin reportedly accused Brittany of chasing too much spotlight and Swift’s company.

Even on the field, his estimations of the Chiefs are a little dim. This is evident when he questioned their ability to win Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. He said, “The best chance they [the Chiefs] had went out the window when this Super Bowl was played in New Orleans. They’re going to finish this thing in a dome. The Detroit Lions will play all the way in a dome. The best chance the Chiefs had was to get them outside. They won’t see them outside.”
But the Lions are now eliminated from the playoffs. So, perhaps that’s why Irvin is looking elsewhere in the Chiefdom for things to criticize. On this particular topic, he sounds rather fearful, and perhaps rightly so. A third title in a row could go a long way in tilting the balance of the ‘America’s Team’ tag towards the Chiefs!
