No one disrespects the GOAT. Topics surrounding Tom Brady can often escalate into complex concerns if not dealt with care. And Cam Newton learned it the hard way. In a recent episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the ex-NFL MVP, Cam Newton, classified quarterbacks such as Tua Tagovailoa, Brock Purdy, Jared Goff, and Dak Prescott as “game-managers” instead of “difference-makers” for their respective teams. Newton went on to elaborate on his definition of a “game manager” quarterback, emphasizing the importance of making timely plays while prioritizing ball protection.

He cited Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady as best fitting the title of the ultimate elite “game managers”. However, there needs to be a clear discrepancy in how the term is understood, as many may find it challenging to label Manning and Brady as game managers throughout their illustrious careers. Despite the debate, criticism of Newton’s take extended to personal jabs about his attire or comparisons to internet trolls. Adding to the flame was another 2X Super Bowl champ, who vehemently shredded Newton’s unwise comments.

Cam Newton, after stirring controversy by labeling NFL MVP candidates as “game managers,” responded to the backlash by specifically calling out ESPN and FS1. Asante Samuel Sr., the four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Super Bowl champion recently shared his perspective on the issue, by stating a strict, Keep Tom Brady Out Of Your Weird Conversations.” “Don’t you ever in your life put anything else next to Tom Brady’s name apart from greatness,” he continued before establishing the fact that there should be no other player named in the same sentence as Tom Brady and he should never be referred to as a game manager. Though Samuel kept his criticism focused on what NEwton had said, not all analysts took that road.

ESPN NFL reporter Kimberley A. Martin criticized Newton’s analysis, emphasizing his absence from the league since 2021 and the lack of interest from NFL teams for the last two years. Meanwhile, ESPN contributor Domonique Foxworth suggested that Newton’s provocative statements may be aimed at attracting attention. Newton expressed greater concern about the responses targeting him personally rather than addressing his perspective on the quarterbacks in question. Well, if you were thinking Newton was the only one who got the memo wrong, you are mistaken.

Edelman emphasized Smith’s positive qualities but suggested he wasn’t the right person to criticize the “GOAT” like that. Ultimately, Edelman emphasized that despite Smith’s accomplishments, he was destined to play a part in the journey shaped by the greatest dynasty in NFL history.
