Does Belichick's legacy with the Patriots outweigh any potential new challenges with the Giants?

Football fans are delighted to see Bill Belichick on social media- or “Instaface,” dare we say. He’s got his own podcast; we’ll see him regularly on Inside the NFL showing a whole different side of him that we’ve never seen. However, the mind begs the question: Will Bill Belichick ever return as an NFL coach again? There are clearly some teams that need a new head coach, right?

Colin Cowherd is also curious about the 8x Super Bowl-winning coach’s future. He and Julian Edelman picked each other’s brains about where the former Patriots head coach would land if he ever wanted to return to the league. Would the league embrace Belichick if suddenly, he decided to come back?

Cowherd was sure that Belichick will “send his resume out again” and it won’t be a surprise if his resume finds itself in Meadowlands somehow. “Do you think he’s kind of a Northeast guy?” Cowherd asked Julian Edelman on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. The host brought up the prospect of the former Patriots HC joining the New York Jets or the New York Giants, but Edelman had a rousing theory.

“I think the situation has to be right,” said Edelman. “Northeast probably helps because he’s got family there, that’s where all the family is at. The real enticing one to me is if the New York Giants open up, and I’m not calling for anyone’s job. I love [Brian] Daboll.” Belichick served as the Giants defensive coordinator from 1985-1990 and his love for the blue team is no secret. He’s spent the nascent years of his NFL coaching career with the Giants, 6 years to be exact.

But there are more reasons why Edelman thinks that Bill Belichick will return home to the Giants after all these years. “I remember vividly, anytime we played in New York, or we played the Giants, you could see a little, like, jingle in Belichick’s spirit, because he loved talking about those old Giants teams.” Per the former Patriots receiver, Belichick would be interested in going to a place where he doesn’t have to “rebuild” a franchise.

At this point, we see Daniel Jones and his Giants struggling very badly and that was pretty evident after a miserable 6-28 loss to the Vikings in the week 1 game. The Giants struggled last season too, finishing with a 6-11 record and this year feels no different. It would be a great story to tell if Belichick ends up joining the Giants somewhere down the line and turns the franchise around.

On that note, let’s explore Belichick’s past and his love for the New York Giants.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Belichick's legacy with the Patriots outweigh any potential new challenges with the Giants?

Why Bill Belichick joining the Giants is more plausible than joining the Jets

Firstly, the New York Jets and Bill Belichick have a bad blood since the early ‘90s. Secondly, Giants was the first NFL gig that Belichick landed in 1979. The former Pats HC started his journey with the Giants as a special teams coach. He eventually got promoted to the linebackers coach before becoming the DC for the New York team under Bill Parcells.

He got the Giants a Super Bowl their very first Super Bowl ring with Parcells. That was only one of the four trophies that the franchise has with the 8x Super Bowl winnig coach. Belichick is very sensitive about that time and he almost “chokes up” when he talks about the New York Giants football team. His love for the team became apparent when NFL Films’ “A Football Life” documentary surfaced. “This is a great organization,” Belichick said of the Giants in the documentary. “It’s hard not to get choked up about it… I loved it here.” But as much as Belichick loves the Giants, he has a shaky, love-hate relationship with John Mara, the co-owner of the team.

For the most part, John Mara and Bill Belichick had a great relationship but in 2022, the Giants told Belichick that they’d give him a shot at the head coaching job and ultimately ended up giving it to Brian Daboll. But the second-most winningest coach in the history of the sport already knew that Daboll was getting the job. To this day, Mara is perplexed about how Bill Belichick knew about that. He accidentally sent a congratulatory message to Brian Flores, another candidate for the job and the messages got leaked. That landed the former Pats coach in heaps of trouble after the text was used against him in a lawsuit.

On the other hand, the possibility of Belichick joining the New York Jets seems abysmally low. That’s because he resigned just one day after being named the head coach back in the ‘90s. Not only that, he handed his resignation on a piece of napkin that said, “I resign as HC of the NYJ.” He resigned because his contract had convoluted language and prohibited Belichick from talking negotiations with other teams. Belichick has hated them since and made it a point to humiliate the Jets at every opportunity he got. Moreover, after parting with the Jets, he never gave them a trade opportunity or dealt with them in any capacity.

It’s difficult to comprehend a stern man like Belichick can backpedal. So no, the Jets might not be the answer. Again, if he joins the Giants at some point, it will be one heck of a story.
