Do you remember the Packers vs. Dallas game last year in the Wild Card round? Yes, the Cowboys lost, but oh boy, it fired up one man way too much. Who? The guy who got them two Super Bowl rings in a row, that’s who. The entire FOX set was quiet when Jimmy Johnson raged and said, “You get your rear end in there, and you play the way you know how to play. We can win the game!” There’s no wonder why he was one of the best HCs the NFL has ever seen. But after retiring as a coach, he walked the path of the TV industry and joined FOX Sports as an analyst. And just like he built a powerhouse on the field, he created the same kind of legacy on screen—becoming one of the most respected voices in football.
Jimmy Johnson is a living example of a jack of all trades. Why? He wasn’t just a legendary coach but made a few appearances on the big screen, too. Yes, he’s been in a couple of movies. Just before the big game on FOX, the host jokingly asked who between Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long was closer to winning an Oscar. Johnson wasn’t about to be left out of the fun. With a grin, he chimed in, “Well, now, you shortchanged me there. I was in The Waterboy with Adam Sandler.” The lighthearted exchange had everyone laughing, and Johnson himself seemed to enjoy the moment. He later took to social media with a simple two-word response. “Enjoyed this.”

The fun didn’t stop there. As the conversation continued, Johnson played along, giving props to his colleagues. “Howie was in Firestorm, and he came out of that water, you know, with the fire going. Pretty impressive. He did a great job,” he said. Then came the real punchline. “Terry was in Failure to Launch, and he was naked in that,” Johnson quipped, sending everyone into laughter. Johnson’s time in Hollywood might not have earned him an Oscar, but it wasn’t about winning one in the first place. His cameo in The Waterboy wasn’t about making it big in the movies, but who would want to miss the chance to be on screen with Bill Cowher? And Jimmy’s presence alone was enough to make fans take notice. But beyond the movies and TV appearances, it’s his dynamic with his longtime FOX colleague Terry Bradshaw that truly stands out.

The two have shared the studio for years, but their bond extends beyond football. The FOX host playfully put them on the spot, asking, “Who’s the better fisherman, and who’s better at telling the fish stories?” Johnson didn’t hesitate. “Well, since I’ve been fishing a little bit longer, I tell the best fish stories. Terry’s the better fisherman on freshwater. I’m the better fisherman on saltwater,” he answered with a smirk. It was a classic Johnson response—confident, a little playful, and always entertaining. Whether it’s football, TV, or even fishing, Johnson has a way of making every moment feel like a story worth telling. But for how long? Let’s take that under the radar.
Is Jimmy Johnson bidding farewell to FOX?
If we start to list down one of the most successful careers in the NFL or in the world of broadcasting, it’d be a sin not to mention Jimmy’s name in it. The man didn’t just win 2 Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys; he built a dynasty. And when Johnson traded the headphones for a microphone, he brought the same jazz on TV. Recently, Fox aired an emotional video for the legend before the SB LIX. Let me tell you, that video almost felt like a farewell. So, it was an AI-generated video that started all the way from the time he first started playing championship games. And the video ended with him handing a football to his younger self. I know, right? Pretty emotional. I mean, it was touchy enough to make a grown man like Jimmy shed a few tears.

That’s all it took for the internet to spiral into theories. Was this the end? Was Jimmy really hanging up after three decades? Even Curt Menefee, in a friendly way, asked, “Was that goodbye?” But you know how Jimmy is, he gave a wise response, “One day at a time.” But it was cleared later on reports that the segment was never intended as a retirement in the first place. It was just an ode to his legacy. Hey, let’s be real for a second; the moment felt a lot bigger than just a tribute, right? The emotions portrayed and the timing of it all, no wonder fans jumped to conclusions. But whoever made that video deserves a raise.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Jimmy Johnson's legacy at FOX as impactful as his Super Bowl-winning days with the Cowboys?
Have an interesting take?
Trust me, an 81-year-old man doesn’t need the world to tell him he’s almost at the end of the road. He already knows it. But they still wake up each morning and come to work because they truly love it. Right now, nothing is set in stone that he will actually say bye-bye. Fox confirmed that Jimmy will be back, at least for now. And Johnson himself said, “I can truly say because of my family and because of y’all. I’ve never been happier than in this time of my life. Happiest I’ve ever been in my life.” The next time Fox will broadcast the Super Bowl will be in 2029—who knows if Jimmy will stay for that long? But no matter when he decides to step away, it’s going to be a ride to remember until the very end.
