The Cowboys are staring at another underwhelming season and the mood around AT&T Stadium is ominous. Owner Jerry Jones has garnered more attention with his comments than the Cowboys have for their on-field displays. A couple of weeks ago, he threatened to have the hosts of the 105.3 The Fan morning show fired before returning to the broadcast a week later. Then last week he seemingly called out HC Mike McCarthy’s “bad plays,” but has again changed his tune after the defeat against the 49ers.

Jones’s team is 3-4 at the moment and the Cowboys’ fanbase might be resigned to their team’s fate. The team has the league’s worst rushing offense and is allowing more yards per game on the ground than any other team, along with the Carolina Panthers. They also have a minus-eight turnover ratio, the league’s third-worst figure. Despite, the apparent writing on the wall, Jones isn’t giving up yet.
He appeared on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning and talked about how the season is going for his team. Despite expressing his frustration with the style of play earlier, Jones admitted the team’s limitations while reiterating his faith in the squad at his disposal.
Speaking with hosts ‘Shan and RJ,’ Jones said, “I have a lot of faith in these players. I have a lot of faith in this coaching staff. The big thing is, that’s what we’ve got. And that’s the reality.” Let’s not forget that the current team is made up of a lot of players who have gone 12-5 in each of his three regular seasons, so Jones’s belief might not be completely misplaced.
Looking back to last season, Dallas held a 4-2 record but found themselves in a rut. They managed to bounce back, winning six of their next seven games and re-entering the Super Bowl conversation. But can they come from behind to save McCarthy and Jones’ reputation? That seems like a tall order given how they have looked weak this season.

Against the 49ers, the Cowboys were up by 10-6 at the end of the second quarter. However, they were swept away in the third quarter as the hosts scored 21 without reply. Yet, with a little over three minutes to play, they only trailed by six points. Their star QB Dak Prescott took the field 75 yards away from possibly winning the game with a touchdown drive. But as has been the story this season, Prescott threw four straight incompletions as the Cowboys ended with a 24-30 defeat.
There are 10 games left in the regular season and the Cowboys will need to win the majority of them to stop their season from unraveling. Jones, on this occasion, gave his backing to the coaching team to turn things around. He said, “The coaching staff has got their eye on the things we need to improve on. We need to improve on communication across the board, and we can. … We’ll have some players coming back (from injury) that will play critical roles for us. We ought to get better. We’re seven games into a seventeen-game season, let’s get this thing turned around and have a storybook ending to a rough start.”
The talk of a storybook ending and showing support to the coaching team is a departure from his comments on the same show last Tuesday. Talking about the team’s struggling offense, Jones said, “We’re designing bad plays, or we’re designing bad concepts. The facts are that there’s some of that, but there’s also some execution [issues].” This seemed like a shot at HC McCarthy’s tactics when it comes to the offense of the team.
Jones had also talked about the quality of the team, adding, “There’s some of the talent. I like our talent, I really do like our talent. I like our young talent, but young talent has a few more mistakes associated with it than if you’re dealing with a veteran player.”
Coming into the game against the Niners, the Cowboys were fresh off a bye. McCarthy was upbeat. He discussed how his team had utilized the break for self-scouting and preparation. “That’s a tough place to play,” the coach acknowledged. Yet, the defeat, coupled with Jones publicly critiquing the coaching staff will spark speculation about his future.
Not to mention, he is in the final year of his contract which again may not help matters. Even though, Jones has said that there won’t be any drastic changes, a former Cowboys player made a wild request to Jerry Jones after the latest loss.

In a spicy tweet, Dez Bryant implored Jerry Jones, “Fire everybody Jerry. Stop jacking around!” Oof. Dallas is stumbling like a rookie in their first game. Sure, there’s hope with potential returns for defensive stars like Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
But well—the offense is in dire straits, sitting dead last in the league with a horrendous average of 77.2 rushing yards per game. During the 49ers matchup, the ground game managed a piteous 56 yards. McCarthy did admit to the limitations of his side after the 49ers defeat. He said, “We’re green. We have a lot of young guys, and they’ve got to keep working. And we have a lot of veterans who are new, so they’re adjusting, too. Our continuity isn’t there, and that’s gonna show up in run defense and running the ball.”
Well, whatever issues lie, he will have to find a solution quickly. Looking down the road, their run-in ain’t getting any easier.

Dallas has some heavyweight matchups coming up against the Falcons (5-3) and Philadelphia (5-2). With Mike McCarthy at the helm since 2019 and still no playoff wins, Jones might need to shake things up. It’s high time the Cowboys find their spark—or risk getting burned!
