Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was Jerod Mayo’s squad. Even Belichick took his sweet time collecting the best-suited players and coaches to build a history-etching team before winning his first Super Bowl. However, the crushing blows in Jerod Mayo’s process are determined to test the lengths of his steely determination.

Devin McCourty, the next-on-list candidate on Mayo’s list of potential staff members had different career plans when Mayo approached him with a spot in the Patriots staff.

“Nah I’m old and washed up,” McCourty hilariously said. Continuing further about Mayo, “He’s trying to get me to coach. That’s his thing with all the older guys, I don’t know if they walking back but we got a spot for them in the staff. But those hours are not meant for my life right now.”

Testing a page from Bill Belichick’s playbook of getting the former Patriots’ players in the fold, either as a player or as a part of the staff, initially looked like a titillating idea to Mayo. The two massive reactions he has received from it, however, might dampen the spirit of the Patriots head coach.

However, some fans speculate that Mayo’s initial attempt was quite a long shot since it was made on one of the most sought-after faces of the NFL: Tom Brady. Even Fox Sports had to sign an insane amount of $375 million for a contract running through 10 years to secure him as their analyst. So the idea of him joining Mayo’s staff as a coach would surely be too far-fetched.

Tom Brady is not too sure about coming out of retirement

Jerod Mayo was thrilled to roll out the proposal to Tom Brady to join the Patriots again. However, Mayo won’t necessarily be looking to sign him as a player. “I love Tom and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo said during his interview with WEEI in Boston on Monday.

He made it clear about coaching but also expressed uncertainty about Brady returning to the field. “As far as going on the field, I don’t know,” Mayo said. When the spotlight shifted to Brady to hear out his response, the GOAT didn’t seem too thrilled to make a comeback altogether, let alone as a coach.

“I’m not opposed to it. I don’t know if they’re gonna let me if I become an owner of an NFL team, but I don’t know if  I’m always gonna be in good shape, (if I’ll) always be able to throw the ball. So to come in for a little bit, like M.J. coming back? I don’t know if they’d let me, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it,” Brady said during the ‘Deep Cuts’ podcast.

Brady has already come out of retirement once, so his coming back in the game, that too as a coach for Mayo, would be the wildest possibility in the NFL this season. Even Mayo was prepared for this rejection, since he admitted that, “Brady won’t be walking in those doors anytime soon.” So, if not Brady and McCourty, who do you think will join Mayo’s team?
