When it comes to the players, Jerry always waits to the last minute. In this case, I guess you got to the last minute,” said Scott Van Pelt on the January 13 discussion of the ESPN Monday Night Countdown. The case he is referring to is that of Mike McCarthy, who has (been) moved on from Jerry Jones’ Cowboys. And just like most times, Jones has not opened up about what went wrong.

However, former Eagles center Jason Kelce made an interesting statement. He recalled the delay on contract extensions of WR CeeDee Lamb and QB Dak Prescott and said, “I do think that Jerry, the way the organization is run, it just feels like, that’s more the issue than it is the coaching. They didn’t make the investment in the free agency. They didn’t make the moves necessary to really compete. And all of a sudden, now McCarthy is kind of being phased out.

Jerry Jones really is an embodiment of mystery. He never reveals the purpose behind any move. The best example is the week 10 game against the Eagles. Lamb missed out on a touchdown because of the sun’s glare directly into his eyes. After the game, he said that curtains could really help. And it was not something that required anything extra. AT&T Stadium has curtains which are often used in live shows or concerts.

However, Jerry Jones had a stern approach. He denied the request straight away. This year, the Cowboys lost 7 of 9 home games. Where is the crowd’s support? They are the most valued sports franchise in history at $10 billion but can’t even press a home advantage. Going into that game, they had a 3-5 record with 6 home games in hand. Following their loss to the Eagles and their owner’s refusal to use curtains, they lost 3 more at home to finish with a 7-10 record.

Now that they have fired the head coach, Jason Kelce hopes they have a plan. But going by the way they have handled things, it doesn’t look that simple. A Cowboys legend made the same observation.

Troy Aikman takes a jibe at Jerry Jones’ franchise

On the same show, the former Cowboys legend Troy Aikman, who won those 3 Super Bowls that Jerry Jones has, used a powerful statement. Tearing apart the ‘coveted’ head coach position at the Cowboys, he remarked, “I love the Dallas Cowboys. I played there for 12 years, I wish them well. But to say that it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.

The reason for that is very simple. Jerry Jones is not only the owner, but the GM as well. And the football has changed a lot since he took over in 1989. While he has managed the finances well, he needs to sign more talented players for them to achieve glory.

For a head coach, explaining things to a GM who is also the owner is one hell of a task. No one could ever risk making them angry. And Jones never reveals his true feelings. That’s what everyone knows. The owner is said to have talked to Colorado Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders. Does he covet the position?
