It’s a one-man show for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones! The owner is an enigma. Just after winning the week 16 game against the Buccaneers, he claimed the HC Mike McCarthy did a great job. When the Bears wanted to interview the head coach for a potential job, Jones blocked it. It was like a green signal for his continued stay at the franchise. But did the head coach want to stay? He never had any qualms about the management. But the situation has taken a 180°.

Cowboys legend Troy Aikman was the one who won the 3 Super Bowls. That too when Jerry Jones was the owner. But as the head coach parted with the team, Aikman minced no words to criticize the owner. During the January 13 episode of ESPN Monday Night Countdown, he said, “Well, I thought Mike McCarthy would be the head coach. So, this is a bit of a surprise today for me. But it suggests that maybe there is not a real plan. I think most football people that take over as the head coach, they want to do it on their terms. That’s hard to do. I love the Dallas Cowboys. I played there for 12 years. But To say that it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.” That was a brutally honest response that raised many questions.

The first one could be, is Jerry Jones arm-twisting the head coaches to go his way? That’s what Aikman’s words suggest. And as far as the plan goes, when did they have one? Jerry Jones never talked about any plan ever. But the legend did say one right thing, “The Cowboys are a high-profile team.” The first sports franchise to cross the $10 billion valuation mark, their revenue for 3 seasons from 2021 to 2023, was $1 billion each year.

However, their performance on the gridiron is exactly the opposite. With no Super Bowl after 1995, they are still looking for trophies. But Jerry Jones needs to take some solid steps. Hiring a football GM may be the first step toward success. Can he give away some of his power? Doesn’t look like so.

Mike McCarthy helped them qualify for 3 playoffs in his 6 seasons at the Cowboys. But the wait for someone after Barry Switzer continues who can assemble a Super Bowl-winning team. They are back in the market, looking for their man.

Is Jerry Jones' control over the Cowboys a blessing or a curse for the team's future?

While McCarthy might be interested in Bears or other teams who need an HC, Jerry Jones would also like to meet new people. Troy Aikman suggested a familiar name. Kellen Moore! He was with the franchise from 2018 to 2023. But risking their future with a first-time head coach is huge. They are desperate for a trophy.

A few other probable names are Lions OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn, and former Seahawks HC Pete Carroll are also being discussed. While Carroll has won a Super Bowl with the Hawks, the Lions’s coordinators have driven them to brilliant success. They topped the NFC as the top seed this year. But there is one thing that needs to be good for anyone who wants the HC job at the America’s Team.
