3 consecutive playoffs and a 49-35 record over the last five seasons wasn’t enough for Mike McCarthy to get his contract extension in Dallas. Well, you can’t just judge a man based on his overall record and keep him in charge of America’s Team. So, after weeks of ifs and buts surrounding McCarthy’s tenure in Dallas, Jerry Jones didn’t find him worthy enough to lead anymore. While some might question Jones’ decision to fire McCarthy, former Cowboys WR Michael Irvin is excited for the future.
Hopping on FS1, Irvin expressed his true thoughts, witnessing his former team move on from McCarthy. Pointing out the Cowboys’ approach to the season, Irvin felt, “There was hope loss, and you could see it.” See, after starting the season 3-2, the Cowboys went on a five-game losing streak. And that’s when their chances to make the playoffs started to crumble. But some of you could say, what about the injuries they had? Well, you are not wrong. We will give you that. Dallas started to lose key players like Dak Prescott, Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs all through injuries.
However, it isn’t like the Cowboys couldn’t have turned things around. They did end up winning four of their next five games after snapping their losing streak against the Commanders. But yet again, they weren’t consistent enough. That Irvin summed up in his hot take on FS1, “The Cowboys have lacked great focus.” Like to help you get a better understanding of what Irvin tried to portray with his message. Let’s give you one solid example. Remember the Cowboys’ last season’s wildcard loss to the Packers at home.

After going down 27-0 in the first half, Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys never looked threatening. And ended up settling for an embarrassing 48-32 loss to end another season of what could have been. Now, to give his honest opinion on the Cowboys sacking Mike McCarthy, Irvin said, “I’m just happy with the new direction and the energy that will go into the new direction.” Well, you could probably feel the excitement in Irvin’s words while describing his thoughts of what the Cowboys’ future could look like after McCarthy’s departure.

But it seems Irvin’s former teammate in Dallas, Troy Aikman, was flabbergasted when he found out McCarthy won’t be returning next season.
Troy Aikman left surprised by Jerry Jones’ decision on Mike McCarthy
When the news came out that McCarthy wasn’t going to sign his contract extension. Aikman was proven wrong in his thoughts regarding McCarthy’s future in Dallas. On ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, Aikman didn’t hide his true feelings, watching his former team refuse to renew the 61-year-old’s contract, “I thought Mike McCarthy would be the head. So this is a bit of a surprise for me today that he’s not going to be.” And unlike Irvin’s thoughts on McCarthy’s time in Dallas, where he failed to impress the former wide receiver.

McCarthy did earn praise from the former Cowboys QB, “I think Mike McCarthy is an outstanding football coach. He’s proven that in this league.” See, there is no doubt that McCarthy has a proven experience as a head coach in the NFL. He has won a Super Bowl during his time in Green Bay and also boasts a .608 record as a coach in the regular season. However, those records didn’t really mean anything for the Cowboys. Yes, McCarthy did deliver postseason tickets for three consecutive seasons. But they didn’t go beyond that. And that’s the problem in Dallas.
So, Jones has had enough of mediocrity in Dallas. He is probably planning something big for his beloved Cowboys. And that doesn’t include Mike McCarthy.
