The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback constant, Colin Kaepernick’s life has much to offer rather than his exceptional stints on the field. His journey as a football player and as a civil rights activist has been intricately woven with love.
Being raised by his adoptive parents, Rick and Teresa Kaepernick, the family adopted the player when he was just six weeks old. In 2021, the Netflix series, “Colin in Black & White” gave a glimpse into Colin’s childhood experiences while growing up with his adoptive family.

The Kaepernick couple initially resided in Wisconsin, the birth state of Colin before shifting to California when he was four years old. The couple adopted the player from his biological mother, Heidi Russo, who was only 19 years old then. As Russo was searching for the right family to provide Colin with a loving home, it was a mutual friend who connected Heidi with the Kaepernicks.
In December 1987, he was adopted and Colin’s adopted mother recalled the emotional day by sharing her experience, “I just picked him up out of the carrier. The minute I picked him up, I just cried.” As the sources revealed, before adopting Colin, the couple welcomed two kids of their own in 1987. But unfortunately, they lost their son Kyle and daughter Devon to congenital heart defects. Colin’s success in his career as the quarterback along with his activism are deeply rooted in the values and support instilled in him by his adoptive parents.
