Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and renowned activist Colin Kaepernick revisits the racial injustice and discrimination he experienced through his new book. In his recently released autobiographical graphic novel, ‘Change the Game,’ Kaepernick delves into pivotal moments that shaped his activism on and off the football field.

One such moment highlighted in the novel occurred during Kaepernick’s encounter with racism from white Americans, a theme he courageously confronts throughout his narrative. Describing an incident on page 13, Kaepernick recounts feeling the sting of derogatory remarks aimed at him solely based on his race.

In a poignant monologue, he reflects, “I didn’t have the words then for what I was experiencing,” encapsulating the profound impact of systemic racism on his identity. The graphic novel vividly depicts a scene where Native Americans used to whisper behind Kaepernick’s back, cruelly mocking his appearance with the phrase, “He looks like a clown.” These hurtful words and body-shaming served as a stark reminder of the pervasive discrimination faced by people of color in America.

Kaepernick’s resolute response to such bigotry is evident as he asserts, “I got the message clear and loud… My existence and my body and the way my hair grew out of my head naturally… that was somehow not okay [to them].” Thе book furthеr dеlvеs into thе challеngеs hе facеd as a biracial child raisеd by adoptеd parеnts in a prеdominantly whitе California nеighborhood.
