Jeff Benedict, author of The Dynasty, recently joined Colin Cowherd to dissect his book and its portrayal compared to Apple TV+’s documentary. Cowherd offered an interesting perspective: “That all dynasties, almost all are the same. Hard work and vision build them. Resilience and toughness maintain them and then power corrupts them.” This sentiment seems to be a central theme in Benedict’s book, regardless of its slant. The conversation naturally steered toward power, and Bill Belichick’s name inevitably came up. Cowherd stated, “Bill could never come to terms with year 2 Tom Brady, was not year 18 Tom. The league had pivoted to offense and he was treated like a kid because he wanted to maintain governorship. He wanted the power.”

Belichick’s 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots was built on a complex relationship with Brady. Of course, it’s the one that yielded six Super Bowl victories but also harbored a mix of love and bitterness.

Did Belichick have the upper hand over Tom Brady?

Tom Brady’s incredible journey with the Patriots began as a sixth-round pick. He grew under Bill Belichick’s guidance in his early years to become the NFL’s most honored quarterback. Their partnership spanned 20 seasons, carving their names in history with countless victories. They seemed to really respect each other, and things were steady. But things started to go south near the end of Brady’s time with the Patriots.

A major reason for the tension was that Brady wanted more control over his training, especially with his own trainer, Alex Guerrero. Belichick attempted to maintain control, allegedly treating Brady “like that 20-year-old kid” he drafted. This quite strained their once-strong bond. Further fueling the friction was the Patriots’ hesitancy to commit to a long-term contract, hindering Brady’s desire to play until 45. The future Hall of Famer later admitted that he wanted to prove himself outside Belichick’s shadow, contributing to his eventual departure. While their bond frayed in the end, Bill Belichick’s impartial coaching approach undeniably fueled both the Patriots’ success and Tom Brady’s rise to superstardom. Both have moved on, leaving behind a legacy of dominance and a bittersweet conclusion to their legendary partnership.
