Amidst the excitement of the Super Bowl LVIII where the Kansas City Chiefs won 25-22 overtime against the San Francisco 49ers, a dilemma persists. With the Chicago Bears faced with the difficult decision, QB Caleb Williams’ NFL Draft Stocks are seeing a significant rise. A flurry of discussion has taken center stage amidst rumors that the Bears are considering trading Justin Fields. 

Entering from USC as the favorite No. 1 pick, many are siding with the 6’1, 215-pound Caleb Williams as the new Bears’ QB. NFL scouts were impressed with his natural arm talent and his remarkable arm angle velocity. As for Fields, his future with the Bears remains uncertain as the franchise reportedly debated their next move. 

Would the Bears ultimately choose Williams over Fields?

NBC Sports Chicago recently received diverse views on whether the Bears should keep Justin Fields and build around him or trade him for Caleb Williams, who’s reportedly the best player drafting for the NFL. According to a league source, “I just don’t see the argument for keeping Fields. There hasn’t been nearly enough production as a passer to warrant passing on Williams… The NFL is unfair. But these opportunities rarely come around. Think about how long Chicago has needed a quarterback. Well, now is their chance.”

Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy at USC in his first season with 4,500 yards. His accuracy while on the move sets him apart from many QBs. One of his main strengths is his playmaking ability, which usually lands him in comparison with 3x SB champ Patrick Mahomes. Retired TE Antonio Gates said of Williams, “I can’t see nobody passing on a guy that can throw from all those angles like Patrick Mahomes… I’m not guessing with him.” But some feel that Fields should be given another chance to prove his worth with the Bears. 

Is retaining Justin Fields a good option?

While Williams seems like a grand idea to change where the Bears are at with 7-10, 3rd in NFC North, Fields also has some supporters sticking with him through thick and thin. Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins said, “You know Justin is a QB, and you know I’ve seen it… They just got to build around him… He just needs a chance.”

With 2,562 yards and 16 touchdowns in the 2023 season, Fields played well but not well enough to provide assurance to his team. As former NFL QB Kurt Warner said, “When you have three years and you don’t take out the doubt to go, ‘He’s our guy!’ I think you have to move on.” From these latest revelations, it looks like Williams has the upper edge over Fields as the Bears’ QB.
